Building a survival/emergency kit to pick up from the garage and put into the Titan or Camry if a hurricane/tornado/terrorist attack/flu pandemic/etc hits.
My criterion for a case was a lockable, foot-locker size plastic box with metal hinges and built-in wheels. My wife has to be able to wrestle it into the trunk. Searched in Lowes/Wal -Mart/Home Depot. Got one (forgot store) but have not seen them since.
So far the contents are:
1) a roll of duct tape
2) a self-powered (shake it) flash light
3) a large commercial first aid kit
Looking for suggestions for the contents. I do not want to spend a lot of money to duplicate items I use every day and I want it to be always ready to go with no last minute insertions. Thanks.

there was no "government" there at the time, just the US Military taking care of business.
For the kit, canned foods or the freeze dried type food you can buy from a outdoor store, or if have access to some MRE's would be nice.

I did all this without wife knowing
1. Small amount of cash-in times like those, power will be out.
2. Rain gear/blanket/work gloves/waterproof shoes (Clothing you can wear over or replace what you're wearing.)
3. Medical (breathable) masks. In case of dust/viruses, a set of masks can reduce opportunities for contact.
4. Alcohol-based soap to wipe off hands and other areas that come in contact with others.
5. Full size spare tire. (Replace your existing donut if you don't have one.) In the event of a major weather event, the liklihood increases of road debris puncturing a tire.
6. Protein bars (vacuum sealed)
7. Water
8. Map
9. If canned food-can opener!
10. Batteries/LED HEADBAND flashlight-works longer
11. Waterproof dunk bag
12. Pepper spray
13. Multi-tool with knives, flathead, pliers, phillips head screw drivers.

Mentioned earlier, but added to this good list - a loud whistle. Try to find a plastic one without a pea in it.
If it is for your 04 Titan, I would add a spare differential, spare radiator, spare steering rack, maybe some extra brake pads and rotors and if you have any extra room, throw a Transmission in. That should handle the major emergencys. Don.t forget the duct tape, that will handle the rest.

My family and I have been through a couple of hurricanes lately. I've learned a lot.
I second the cash suggestion. When the power is down, nobody takes credit cards.
I'd add to the list:
Make a list of things you need so that you can check to see if you forgot anything.
Make a list of important documents you need. Birth certificates, Bank account numbers, etc.
A cell phone with car and home chargers.
A list of phone numbers of friends & relatives.
Remember when you can't get an open phone line, text messaging is your friend. Text messages get through when nothing else can.
A gas can.
A few changes of clean clothes.
Binoculars.
Pillows and blankets you never know where you will spend the night.
