Honesty???

So I was just at the grocery store getting Coke for my Rum, and I paid via debit card. Asked for $80 cash back. The clerk gave me $100 back. I noticed it as she was counting it out of the drawer, but didn't say anything and went about my business, $20 richer.

Re: Honesty???

I'm always torn. This happened at a gas station once. I gave the guy a 20 to fill it up. He brought me my change, and a 20. I counted, looked, he walked away quickly, my friend said "go" and I did.

Don't recalll what I spent it on, but it didn't change the future hah.

Re: Honesty???

I would give it back to the cashier if I noticed it, but if I went on with my business and found it later, I'd keep it

Re: Honesty???

Funny you should bring this up. My wife told me when she was at Meijers grocery shopping a couple of days ago that she saw a fleece vest she liked.

As she was shopping she got warm in he coat so she took it off and put it in the cart. Later on she got cool again so she put the vest on.

When she got home she remembered that she didn't pay for the vest. I told her to go back but she said she didn't have the receipt or the tags anymore - I can believe that since yesteday was garbage day and they probably got tossed - but she will talk to the manager and offer to pay for it when she goes shopping there again.

Re: Honesty???

I give it back if I notice, people get fired over that kind of stuff, or end up having to pay for it out of pocket.

Re: Honesty???

i've always pointed out the mistake and given it back. Although, if i was 10 miles down the road i probably would most likely keep it.

Recently i was in line at the cashier waiting for a kid (12-13 or so) in front of me to finish his purchase. The cashier said he was short about a buck or so, so i made up the difference for him. The kid grabbed his stuff, didn't look at me, didn't thank me, just wallked off and out the door. I thought you little son-of-a-beatch!! Kids these days!

Re: Honesty???

1. Would you want it done to you?
2. If a business did not perform a service, would you not go back and say something?
3. If someone damaged your truck and did not contact you to let you, you would be okay with that?

IF the answer to those questions is "no", then you would do well to contact the person and let him/her know of the mistake.

The level of the incident does not matter.

The action to take is still the same. IMHO.

Re: Honesty???

Mine would depend on the attitude of the cashier.
If they were rude and not paying attention to me,that's probably why they screwed up and I would keep it.
If they were friendly and made a simple mistake I would hand it back.
If they had great tits,I would give it back also though,a mans gotta have his priorities.....

And if you did that same behavior and came up $20 short, you wouldn't have a problem with that correct?

Re: Honesty???

RRumaner; Becareful if your wife goes back to pay for the vest. These big box stores are so used to being ripped off they might call the police anyways and accuse your wife of shoplifting and then having remorse about it. Even though it sounds like your wife had a senior moment the manager might not see it that way if he decides to be a hard a** about it. Sometimes its better to let sleeping dogs lie. Donate the cost of the vest to charity or something. IMO

Re: Honesty???

There are ethical moments in everyone's life everyday, most are minor in nature and don't amount to much consequence in of themselves. Is there a line we have made for ourselves that we say we won't cross? If so, where does it start and end and why?

It's really pretty simple:

If it ain't yours, don't take it and pretend that it is.

Re: Honesty???

A couple of incidents that I thought I would share...

1. At a neighbors party, someone sideswiped my Trans Am and drove off...
2. At a local Home Depot, a contractor let his cart roll into my truck, it got hit, he laughed and drove off with his buddy. How did I know? Because the witness saw it but "didn't want to get involved."
3. I was jogging and found a woman's purse complete with cash, checks, credit cards and had to spend 4 hours trying to track her down to give her back her belongings. Her reply to me when I did it was "I was in a hurry." ....and she drove off without a thank you.
4. I was at a supply store and the clerk was ringing up my purchases. When I counted what was charged, I noticed that she missed things and pointed it out to her. When she looked at me and gave her little "head no shake", I walked off-and came back later when she was gone, paid for the purchase by having it rung up, spoke with the manager (not giving him who did it because I wanted him to know that others could be doing the same thing.)

All of these people's actions do not control how I should respond. If I let that happen, I start rationalizing my behavior and when I have kids, I instill in them those values...

Re: Honesty???

a police office for 7 years, I've seen a small percent of people that actually thanked me for helping them.
