I'm looking for a good non slr digital camera that will take good quality photos. Image quality is the most important feature I'm looking for. It will have to take good pictures in low light indoors type environment. I have a newborn so this is the reason I'm wanted to buy the camera. I've been looking on-line and found a couple. The fuji s8100fd and the Olympus sp 570uz. Any and all opinions are welcome.
I have 2 different Canon Powershot models, and love them. For me, there is Canon, and Nikon, and then everybody else. I also have an Olympus SLR that is film, excellent camera, not as nice as a Canon Rebel though.
Also, get it online, not at BestBuy. Bestbuy is NOT the Best Buy.
Check ou this site: http://www.imaging-resource.com/. They have VERY thorough reviews on hundreds of cameras. They even have an "image comparometer" that lets you judge the quality of the images from two different cameras.
If image quality is the most important thing but the price of the SLRs is too high look a the near SLRs. I did and ended up with the Fujifilm FinePix S9100. It has an amazing lens and takes pictures as good as friends Canon and Nikon SLRs for half the cost.

I have a Canon SD950IS that I carry around and/or leave in the truck. Pictures are very sharp in daylight and on a 16 Gig SD card it can shoot alot of video. High ISO (low light) is noisy - but alot of it can be cleaned up in software. Optical zoom could be a little higher x. It has a nice size lcd display. I have a 1D Mark III that has killer image quality and low light performance that shames the 950IS, but of course it is expensive and too big to carry around all the time. The little camera is very handy once you get used to it. For example, if you need some information off an equipment label, a for sale sign, a new vehicle window sticker, or a page in a book, just take a picture.
Canon S5 IS is a great camera. I learned on how to take pics with the older version (S3 IS). It is a point and shoot with some feature found in DSLR. Here are some sample of the S3 IS which is a 6.1 mp vs 8 mp on the S5. Most of this picture have very little editing like the shading and frame.
if you want to find a good camera. rate it by how it takes picture in the dark. almost any camera will take good pictures in day light. In the dark it is a whole different story.

Fast start-up and fast shot-to-shot speeds are VERY useful features when taking pictures of kids and worth considering.

pretty good info up top... i bought my slr before my son was born, he's the reason i stepped up to a great digital SLR and haven't missed a shot yet... ever.
it's not as portable as a smaller digital however. you really can't go wrong with nikon, canon, or olympus. I bought one of my ex's an olympus (forget the specs but it was also water resistant) and it was a great camera for the money.
get this shat, when we broke up she returned all the gifts i bought her, jewelry... the only thing she kept was the camera!

ditto on the IS 5. got mine today. Had an IS 2. Great cameras. Got the 5 from costco.com $329.
Quality video, stereo sound, 12x optical, hot shoe for ext flash, Can buy a teleconverter for it, etc....
I have a Canon SD700IS and I really like it. Pics are great, vids do very well unless you zoom in, then it gets grainy. Almost the second I push the power button I am taking pictures. It is hard to go wrong now a days.
Thanks,
Zack

As a pro photographer, P&Ss are fine for the kids to play with. If you want low light and not have the shutter delay, a simple Canon XTi would be great, yes its a DSLR, but the XSi is coming out so the prices are dropping on the XTi. Having shot film since 84, I prefer the size of the 30D. I bought an Olympus 790SW for the kids to play with, takes pretty nice pics, including underwater to 10ft, shock proof, and freezeproof, nice for the ski trips and days at the pool and beach. I'm happy with Canon though, I have 3 DSLRs that have all taken a beating shooting sports and never missed a lick. Nikons are good.
