*I have seen articles emerge from credible sources recently noting that certain ISPs (time warner, comcast) were limiting bandwidth for all users and charging for overages...similar to cell phone companies who charge for going over minutes...is this the beginning of the end?

the wife was just telling me about this yesterday, that time warner was going to start charging how cell phones companies charge....hopefully it doesn't work for them....hopefully the customers that are their test group let them know what a crappy idea this is.....i can't believe that they could possibly charge a subscription fee for EVERY website there is.....and which sites would be in their 'packages'?? it just doesn't seem feasible that they could do something like this, considering how immense the internet is....
if this were to catch on, i think i would be saying goodbye to the internet....we already pay enough to access it every month, now they want us to pay per site??? that's just as bad as gas hitting $5/gal.
The inter has about reached it's limit and could be replaced in a few years

The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.
At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds
Quote:
More than 400 scientists gathered at the Global Grid Forum this week to discuss what may be the Internet's next evolutionary step.
Though distributed computing evokes associations with populist initiatives like SETI@home, where individuals donate their spare computing power to worthy projects, the Grid will link PCs to each other and the scientific community like never before.
The Grid will not only enable sharing of documents and MP3 files, but also connect PCs with sensors, telescopes and tidal-wave simulators.
IBM's Brian Carpenter suggested "computing will become a utility just like any other utility."
