I am a GS-06, step 9, Federal Firefighter. The Pres. finally signed a bill that will get all Fed Firefighters/EMT basics or Haz Mat Techs a GS-07, so being both I should get a promotion soon.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'll see what happens but, I'm sure it's not going to be good at all. I'll probably have to end up selling my Ram eventually buying a beater and living in an appartment with nothing.

Try and think of it as a temporary thing man. Its not the end of the world. Live cheap today to get ahead for tommorrow. Material things are not everything in life anyway. I tried to keep my head up through it and look at the positive things.

1) By not having alot, you do not have to work alot of hours to pay for it. Thus, more free time.
2) College is a great place to meet women!
3) Owning a "beater" ,per se, is not the end of the world either. They aren't called beaters for any other reason. You can beat them senseless and when they break down, you throw them away!
4)Last but not least...this situation is TEMPORARY! Get out of college with a shiny degree and you will be buying that Titan. In fact, you should set that as a goal for yourself so you can look at look to it on the days you are down about your "beater".

I know it's jut pretty hard dealing with going back to nothing again even I still don't have much to begin with lol. So, just curious what did you go back to school for and what did you end up doing for a job when you got out? I think I found a kind of expensive beater. Found an 98 Dodge Dakota CC 4x4 V8 with manual tranny with 80k miles for $8,800 dollars. My payments would $180 so I should be able to barely afford something like that making $5.50 to $6.00 an hour gross.

Well, I actually got out to get a degree and go back in as a pilot. My eyesight went bad in the end Basically I ended up with a degree in Adolescent Psychology from Cornell Univeristy, but I work in the transportation industry now.

Sorry to disappoint anyone who may look down on me for this choice but, I see more money later on down the road & being single I don't have things like a wife & kids to worry about which is nice I must say. Have fun while you're single all you single guys. Anyways, I try not to spend too much. My big downfall is a spent a lot to pay down on this Ram I got which has been nothing but, a mechanical nightmare & concerns me with what might happen after my 3 year bumper to bumper warranty is up. But, I may get rid of this thing especially if gas goes to $2 a gallon & I guess buy a Nissan or Toyota truck with a 4 cyl & manual tranny.

Don't bring your Titan to Hawaii it's over $2 bucks a gallon for regular 85 octane.

LoadmasterC141. Thanks for the tidbit of information and sorry to hear that you didn't make it to be a pilot. At least things are working out better for you now. Anyways, take care and have a good day.

1Titan. I'll make note of that.

Not sure if all you guys that are coming off active know it or not but research the guard in the state you plan to going to school. I'm going to the Univ of Florida and I get 100% of my tuition paid for by the guard. Some other states that I think do this are Texas and Louisiana. It also helps with the 100-200 bucks you get for one weekend a month. Something to consider.

Reserves also. Just remember there are currently a lot of guard and reserves doing "hard time" in the Middle East, with more to follow. Don't let a call up suprise you. I'm in the USAF reserves, after ten years active duty. I don't really want an "opportunity to excel" in the sandbox.

Also, with the reserves keep in mind that you can be called back or to full time active duty. Some Air Force Reserves have spent 2 years overseas during the war. Just something to think about.

Well my bud is in the CA National guard and is now doing his 'hard time' over there right now (4 days in place-361 to go). I do feel for him and the other reserves etc that are getting 'yanked' out of thier everyday lives but then again, being a 'finished' full-timer who just retired last year I have also 'done my time' so to speak and don't regret a minute of it. If I did, I wouldn't still be working for Uncle Sam in a different capacity now.

We all know you will never 'get rich' working for the government...and trust me, many of us that have/do have to learn 'patience' to get to where we want to get in life - much the same as the college student. The potential for the future life and the lifestyle that will come is good...BUT....only if you play it a little smater in the beginning and not get over your head early. This is the mistake a lot of people make and its very hard to get out of the debt spiral once your in it.

Lastly, cheap transportation does not necessairily mean 'beater' as well. See the picture in my post here? The 2000 Daewoo Lanos that just turned 60k miles was $3k cash (this is soon to be my sons car-serves as a commuter vehicle for us right now). The REDPRLZ 300ZX in the middle bought with 33k on the clock last year ran me $4900. The Z car gets lots off attention by everyone, is reliable and she won two car shows last year. Don't have to spend a mint to have something nice.

Chris

I spend all of my household income every month except what goes into my mortgage payment and 401k. Everything else is gone with the wind.

That's what I did. I quit my forklift job of 9 years, bought a new 97' Nissan pickup (with trade-in and "crazy" rebates I ended up paying only $7650), then went to school full time. Graduated in 2000 and now I sit on my butt for a living writing code and making almost twice as much as I used to.

Go for it kid.
