California DMV Weight Fee

How much is everyone paying for the weight fee on your Titan registration?

Mine is up for renewal and the fee is $204 which is for a 6001-7000 lbs "unladen" vehicle. According to Nissan my Titan should weigh closer to 5200 lbs but I don't know if this is dry weight or what. Has anyone tried to get this fee reduced with any success?

I hate dealing with crap like this but saving $50 or $124 for every year I own my Titan in California isn't exactly small change that I am willing to ignore.

Big brother will screw you any chance it gets. You might as well go to walmart and get a big ole jar of vaseline and get used to it. There's nothing we can do about it other than complain.

If you put a shell on the truck, you can register it as a passenger car and never pay the weight fee. However, if you get caught driving the truck with passenger car plates and no shell, you are going to get screwed. Cops actually pay attention to that too.

Thats interesting. If the vehicle weight is less than maybe we have a fight on our hands. I don't remember what mine was. I should be getting it pretty soon.

I would not give in, just imagine how many people in Cali are being scammed. We could make this a issue. Every little bit of $$ helps towards something else.

titan CC with BT and OR weighs a bit over 5400 lbs with no or little gas. They are trying to screw you! we have the same thing in nc and only the HD trucks have the Weighted plates. Good luck

Re: California DMV Weight Fee

I just checked my reg. and it was $154 not $204. You should combine your 2 theads on this subject and delete one. Just a suggestion. Info on other thread is good.

Re: California DMV Weight Fee

I did the 2 threads because I know not everyone always looks in the different forums (personally I normally just look at the active topics list or search). This thread is regional and asks what other california titans are paying and the other is in the general forum and asks what a Titan weighs but yeah I am trying to get to the same point with both threads.

Re: California DMV Weight Fee

Just got off the phone with the DMV and if you bring in a certified weight certificate showing your vehicle weighs less than what the dealer put on the title they will change it. Now it looks like it is time for my Titan to go on a diet.

Re: California DMV Weight Fee

Sounds like maybe your dealer screwed up on the weight, and now you have to find a certified weighmaster and go weigh your truck. I had to do that to a truck I bought from out of state and I think it was $40. Seems like this would be an easyer fix but then again the dmv is like the irs.

Re: California DMV Weight Fee

In case anyone is interested here is the loophole walleeme mentioned. I don't think it can be a regular shell though, has to be a camper.

9.065 Pickup with a Camper Attached
A commercial vehicle with a camper permanently attached meets the definition of a housecar (VC §362) and may be registered as a passenger vehicle. The buyer should be advised that any use of the pickup without the camper is a violation of the law and he/she may be cited by law enforcement. Weight fees are not due and auto plates are issued. In addition to the usual registration and/or transfer requirements:
• The cost of the vehicle must include the pickup and the camper.
• The buyer must complete a Certification of Vehicle for Human Habitation
(REG 256A) certifying the camper is permanently attached.
A pickup with a camper temporarily attached is a commercial vehicle and the camper is a load. Weight fees are due and commercial plates are issued. The cost of the vehicle is of the pickup only.
