Anyone ever lived near or around Charlotte? I'm being hunted for a position that has their main offices in the city and we would have to move there if hired. From doing web research it looks pretty good, but the only time I spent on that side of the country was 6-months at FT Bragg after the first Desert Storm. Any insider info on schools, housing or general info is appreciated.

I don't live there, but know that area pretty well. It's a great place to live. Just north of town is great. Huntersville, concord, and surroudning areas are close, slightly cheaper to live in and not as conjested. The schools are state run, so they all get basically same funding per child. The schools in and around charlotte are pretty good. Depending on where in Mich. you live, housing may seem high or not. I moved from ohio 14 years ago and will NEVER move back north . Good luck!!

My wife likes an area called Teaga-Kay (that's how she say's it so my spelling if probably off). Housing prices based on what we have found on realtor.com seem in-line with what we are paying in Michigan which are about 30% higher than what we paid in Dallas. What kills us in MI are the taxes! I don't mind MI, but my wife HATES it - hence the move.
Taxes here aren't horrible. If you live in the county compared to the city your property taxes will be about half. You do have to pay a yearly property tax on your vehicles. The titan runs about $200 a year. My jeep is $85. It is base on the value of your vehicle and comes down every year. I don't know in particular the area you are talking about, but that whole area is nice rolling hills and fairly close to the mountains and only couple hours from the beach.
Of course you will be very close to Lowe's motor speedway. Charlotte is basically the unofficial home of Nascar, so if you are a fan its a good place to be.

Actually, now it is the official home of nascar. Good thing for you moving to Charlotte area is that you'll be able to help pay for the Nascar Hall of Fame being built there! Oh and I-485 which will be done about the time your children retire!
Huntersville, north of charlotte, is nice..but its not much cheaper than Charlotte. I live in Statesville which is about 45mins north of Charlotte and its nice, but not something you would want to drive everyday. If you're looking for something a little cheaper and more rural, look towards Concord or even towards Stanly county. My uncle lived there and worked at First Union in Charlotte for a long time. Perhaps south of charlotte is better, inside South Carolina. There are definitely differences in teh cost of living within 30 miles each way you go. I personally don't mind my 30 minute drive to work a day, but if you're not one that can/will do that then be prepared to pay up for home and everything else.
Gastonia also isn't a bad area but just as congested and can be very rough depending on the location you're in.
I live in Hickory, about 1hr from Charlotte. This area is a little more depressed due to the fruniture industry and textiles being down, but it is doing better. Very inexpensive to live here, but not a drive I'd like to do everyday. Charlotte has a cool lake to live on which is huge is you like the water. Lake Norman.

Tega Cay isn't too bad, it is in SC though. If your into the night life and after hours entertainment you may want to stay close to uptown. If you don't mind the drive and can afford the housing, Weddington is a really nice spot. It's just east of Charlotte, in Union County. Taxes are lower and schools are great. The whole west side of Union county is pretty nice if Weddington is out of your price range (it was out of mine ).
I'm originally from Chicago, and never want to go back. It will take you a little while to get used to the humid summers, but its a nice are with great people.
I'm flying into Charlotte tomorrow afternoon for 1.5 days of meetings. While there I'm going to check out Huntersville and Tega Cay. If I have time I'll swing by and check out Weddington. THANKS!!
