Have a 2007 4x2 CC,tow package. hate the one wheel spins, but dont offroad or tow much yet. Is Trutrac practical for a regular day to day driver? Any negatives associated with this mod? If you guys have any advice i'd appreciate it.
thanks.
Is Trutrac practical for a regular day to day driver?
Yes, extremely. It is automatic in its operation, requires no driver action to initiate, strengthens the rear differential with a stronger carrier and eliminates the weak oem spider gears. You need to be aware that both rear wheels will be spinning in low traction situations and conduct yourself accordingly, as the rear of the truck will tend to want to come around as compared to an open diff. This is not really a problem (and can actually be alot of fun) if you know how to drive.
Any negatives associated with this mod?
(1) it costs money (2) potential warranty issues with rear differential (e.g. defects might be blamed on TrueTrac or its installation - for example leaking seals - worn ring/pinion) (3) the need to find a competent installer - as somebody who doesn't know what they are doing can really mess things up.
Thanks for the info guys. I'm definitely interested in this mod and am looking for a few good contacts to install. Bought the truck from Power Nissan in Tempe. Maybe they can do it so the warranty wont be compromised if something goes wrong. my buddy is a manager there so i'm sure he might know of some places to go if you guys don't know of any.....which i doubt
a few dumb questions.
Do the seals, ring and pinion come with TruTrac? i want to make sure i have this done correctly from a legit shop. And also i've heard of different applications: lockers, limited slip diff. Detroit Trutrac etc....
Gas mileage negatively affected?
I'm just looking for basic equal power to both rear wheels if i ever get stuck or am pulling a boat out of water or towing a heavy load. Sounds awesome though and i'm looking forward to this mod.
I had Arizona Differential off of Grand Ave install mine. I have had previous dealings with them, and they are very good at what they do. I don't recall what I paid, but I tried the route you are looking to do, IE the dealer, and the price was heinous, even though I have a great relationship with them. I have been completely satisfied with the TrueTrac, it was a worthy upgrade. Don't forget to get a set of carrier bearings for the install if you decide to go that route.
Ring is removed from your stock housing and transferred over, pinion is not removed. Seals are not replaced, and may leak after the replacement. Nissan manual says to replace seals every time axle is removed, but I took the risk and didn't replace.

I had a part time garage mech do mine. He does gear installs all day at an off road shop and does some side work from his house. A lot less money than shops and very competent work, he does gear work for a few race teams I know too.
PM me if you want his number

I was quoted around $175 to install the TT at Arizona Differential Specialists. That is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than some of the other prices that I've been quoted!!! Guess where I'm going to get the True Trac installed...

damn, that might be the best installation price I've heard ^^ ... I was quoted 245 at a local gear shop in San Diego and I thought that was a great price.

That's what I thought. I'll know more when I actually take the Beastie in for the install. My guess is that they'll try to bilk me for additional parts, fluids, labor, unexpected delays, etc. So far, so good, according to the phone conversation...We'll see.

They won't tack on labor charges. That sub $200 quote sounds like what I paid for labor there. They will charge you a reasonable price for gear oil and carrier bearings if you don't bring your own (I'd call and verify they have a set in stock). It is a business after all. I have been there a few different times for various projects, and always drive away satisfied. Just be aware that it is a tiny place and hard to park and get into to.

Thanks, Ryu. But at those labor rates I'd be happy to park 3 blocks away and walk...lol. BTW, did you have any probs with seal leaks after the install of your True Trac?

So far so good, and I have about 8,000 miles on the TrueTrac. I imagine they will leak eventually, seems to be a rather common problem. I'll jump that hurdle when I get to it. Still keeping my fingers crossed for the meantime. I don't need that expense, as I am trying to save up some coin for my upgrades in 08. If you go get 'er done at AZ diff, or anyone else, let the AZ community know how you were treated. Finding a decent vendor seems to be a challenge at times for specialty work.
