They want to be paid for the 25-45 min it takes them to get dressed in uniforms before they go to work. What the f**k is this world coming to?

Why stop there? How about being paid for travel time to and from work?

i think they want to get paid to put their uniforms on from street clothes and arm up with a vest and all of their gear. Cops dont get paid enough anyways.
They have to leave for work half an hour early to get dressed. I'd say it takes them 15mins max to change out. I can see their point. Give em a 10% raise for their trouble!

They might have a point...though 45 min is just plain robbery. Give them 15 min after clocking in to get suited up. Many of the hourly workers I know get paid to put on special-duty clothing while they're on the clock. The GM folks show up in their street clothes, clock in, then put on their paint suits or assembly-line jumpsuits. The construction guys get paid while waiting to get their tools together and to their job location for the day. A neighbor who works at the airport gets 30 min to change, get her tools together, and be on the ramp after showing up for work.
I draw the line at the article on Fox News last week talking about people wanting OT for responding to their Blackberries at home. If you don't want to get paid for working at home on it, turn it off. If it's part of the job to answer it at home, you're probably either salary or working flex hours already.
I cant believe som of you think that it is even kinda ok. It is rediculous. I don't care how long it takes them to get dressed into uniforms. They should not get paid for it. Cops don't get paid enough?? Come on... they chose thier line of work. That is like saying that teachers don't get paid enough. When you go to the police accademy or school to be a teacher, you know what your going to be and how much your gonna get paid. Cops do it because it is what they love to do (for the most part) as well as teachers. If you want to be rich and wealthy, go into business and figure out the next best thing to sell and start your own business, don't become a cop and look for extra dollars for doing things that everyone else does before they go to work without getting paid for it.

Ever hear the saying: "you get what you pay for?"
If you pay like crap, you will find you won't get the best of the best and those that are good will be smart enough to go where the pay is something one can live on. Those that aren't so good will be tempted to do things they shouldn't just to pay the bills that every family experiences.
You want good people in law enforcement then they have to be treated like you want them to stick around. That means paying them competitively with other professions that require special expertise and abilities.
Cops in my area currently make about 25-30K and most have a second job. There's a problem with that, don't you think?
I still don't agree with the pay to change out. Seek better pay in other areas of contract negotiations. This one just makes them seem, greedy, lazy and spoiled, JMO.

Do the math. Based on the $30k a year figure, giving the cops 15 min to get dressed when they arrive works out to just over $3.50 a day. Like I said above, it's not without precedence for hourly workers to be compensated for "suiting up" for work if they have to wear different clothing to/from work than they're expected to work in. Do you think it's about the extra $20 a week or about the expectations? Please raise my taxes that extra .0001 mil so cops can start their day feeling good about their job before the masses they're supposed to protect crush their spirits for the rest of the day.
Opinions are like a** holes.. everyones got one. I will reiderate my argument on the pay, and I appreciate yours also.
Cops sign up for the job knowing fully what the pay scale is. I disagree with them signing up for that job, then looking for anyway to squeeze out more.

This makes the most sense. ^
Cops do not get paid enough, neither do teachers, but going about a pay raise this way (and business professionals seeking OT pay for Blackberry use) is ridiculous.

Getting dressed for work for most of us is pretty easy. Have you seen the stuff an officer has wear beyond the normal pants and shirt we all wear...
But, we all have to get dressed and we all don't get paid for it..
I can unerstand it, but it does make the cops seem a bit greedy!!!
