THinking of moving to Texas

This is for all the current and former Texas residents. I am thinking of moving from Southern California to Texas. First of all, I am in the military so I have some say on where I go but not completely. I am thinking of making a move to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I currently work in aviation and I know that lockheed has a huge place in Fort worth that I have toured (possible job after I retire, which isn't for another decade), so that would be great for after I get out. Also since I am in the military, they pay by location, so while I would lose some money, it looks as though my dollar will go much farther in Texas compared to California. I would like to eventually buy a home, hopefully settle down and get a nice home, but want to find the right place to do so as I already have 1 house on the other side of the country. Any info on Texas and more specifically Dallas/Fort Worth would be great, both good or bad.

Re: THinking of moving to Texas

It's hot there. Damn hot. I was born and raised in Austin and lived there for almost 50 years. Summer of '11 did me in. We had 90 straight days of 100°+ temps, with higher humidity than you're accustomed to. Brutal. So in late March I moved to a cooler, drier climate in Colorado.

Having said all that, Austin is the area I know best, obviously, so I'll let the other Texas members guide you through the DFW area, but if you want to know anything about Austin I'd be happy to help.

No state income tax, but the property taxes are high to offset that. Cost of living for other things is less than Cali, groceries, utilities, gasoline, etc. Vehicle registrations are a lot less. You'll have an annual vehicle safety inspection which will include smog in DFW. Runs $35 bucks a year if you're clean.

I live in houston about 4 hrs south of Dallas. I have family that live in Fort Worth. They love it. Dallas is nice. Not as hot as houston in the summer and a little cooler in the winters. As for cheaper most things are cheaper here than Cali. Good luck. Hope it all works out

Born and raised in DFW.. I can handle the heat.. I cant handle cold (meaning shoveling snow on sidewalk/driveway).. I love it more here when I see all the mess that goes on elsewhere (aka sandy, earthquakes, blizzards, negative temps for long periods of time, etc). Cost of living isnt bad at all, and you can get alot of house for the $$..
The only thing I wish we had here are basements..

I dont mind working in 100+ degree weather, in my garage, under my car or truck.. theres ways to deal with the heat.. I have plenty of friends with A/C in their garage, have swimming pools, etc.. another reason i like the heat, is girls wear less more often.. ;-)

Re: THinking of moving to Texas

Thanks for the inputs so far. Carbeaux, the other area that I am looking at moving to is surprisingly Colorado.

Re: THinking of moving to Texas

I'm enjoying Colorado, though it is more expensive than Austin was. My property taxes here in CO are less than a quarter what they were in Austin, and the house we bought here is about 55% more expensive than the house I had in Austin. But there is a state income tax here, so they'll get it back that way. I figure in most ways, the taxes are just a wash. Different structuring, but comes out about the same.

The thing(s) I miss most about Austin, aside from my mom and my kids, are the TEXAS BBQ and the seafood/cajun food.

I'm pretty sure gasoline is always cheaper in TX vs CA.

Re: THinking of moving to Texas

I am in Euless, which is part of DFW, very close to the guys buddy that lives in Southlake. The whole mid-cities area is a nice place overall. Its just a short drive from Lockeed in Fort Worth and Bell Helicopter is right down the street from me in Hurst. DFW International airport and American Airlines are very close to me as well.
