Changeing Tranny Fluid

I'm about to change my tranny fluid in my 08 CC and was wondering what kind of fluid should I use and how many qts do I need. This will be a flush only. Also is there a filter to replace and is there a plug on the pan or do I have to pull the whole pan off. Any help on this would be great. Oh ya, also do I have to change the fluid in the diff? Terry

Re: Changeing Tranny Fluid

The flush isn't recommended because it can force crap back through the transmission. I'd just do a drain and fill. You'll need around 4-5qts for that. There is a drain plug on the tranny pan and all they have for a filter is just a little metal screen so you don't need to replace it.

Re: Changeing Tranny Fluid

why are you changing the tranny fluid on an 08? Shouldn't it be good until 100K miles? Also, 08's do not have tranny dipsticks, so how are you going to check your level?

Re: Changeing Tranny Fluid

They are on the left side behind the oil cap. It's bolted down with a 10mm bolt and has a normal pull ring linke all others. I did notice something written on it like " J fluid only". Anyways I like to do my Armada and Titan every 36K. They both are there on mileage now. This will be my first time for these vehicles. On my toyota I had to pull the pan and replace the filter so a drain plug is very nice to have. So on the diff there is also a drain plug?

Ok, here's the deal. Nissan does not recommed a flush because of technicans using pressurized machines to do the flush. However, if you want to get out all the fluid you can do a fluid exchange as long as you use the transmission to pump out the fluid and not pressurize it. There is a great write-up somewhere on these boards on how to do it yourself.

As for the fluid, Nissan has recently phased out Matic J with I believe Matic S. I personally find it ok to use other high end synthetic fluids that are Matic J compatible (Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple) but most will say stick to the Nissan stuff. That's your call. For just a drain and fill, you'll need 4-5 quarts, but for a fluid exchange I believe its 12 quarts or as much as you want to take out. The pan has a drain plug and there is a reusable screen in the tranny that can be cleaned off.

I would change the diff fluid the same time as the tranny. For the rear end, use a synthetic 75w-140 gear lube. It takes a little over 2 quarts to fill and there is a drain plug.

Thank you very much. Exactly what I needed to hear. Perfect write up for people like me. I'm not to auto savvy ( I can do the regular stuff-i.e. oil change) but I can definitely deal with computers and electronics. Thanks again. Terry

Re: Changeing Tranny Fluid

Unless you're doing some super heavy towing or othe rheavy abuse you are throwing away your money by changing your fluid at 36k miles. They are good for 60k miles. Do you do oil changes every 1,500 miles too? This isn't the 50's anymore. These are very advanced fluids that don't need changed out every other week to perform good.

While I agree that we're not in the 50's anymore and fluids can last much longer, I prefer to error on the side of caution. The fluid is the life line for an automatic transmission, having to transfer power, resist shearing/ oxidation all while keeping the internals cool. To me, $120 every 30K for a tranny flush is piece of mind especially if I am planning to keep the truck for a while. Same goes for the rear diff.

BTW, I change my oil every 11,000 miles.

I totally agree with you. I pull my trailer almost twice a week and I am a very hard driver. I change my oil every 3000 miles.
