titanized, wow, great post, one of the best replies I have yet to read regarding this whole ABLS, VDC issue.

So, if I read that and understood it, you can spin BOTH back tires in a straight line. Cool. If I get VDC I can remember to turn it off.

Although I may not be a hole digger, I do have a pention for throwing snow.

Now that we have established how the bals works on the back wheels, can anybody confirm how it works on the fronts in a 4wd?

Exactly the same as in the rear.

If the truck is in 4x4 mode, half of the power made is distributed to the front differential (still an open diff) via the transfer case. If one front wheel begins to slip, ABLS will brake that wheel to distribute torque to the other wheel.

With enough power (or in a very limited traction situation), with VDC off, the truck should be able to spin all 4 wheels.

With the e-locker engaged, ABLS becomes non-functional for the rear axle (there can not be any difference in rotation between rear right and rear left wheels anyway). ABLS will still function for the front wheels in 4x4 w/e-locker engaged.

BigHawaii wrote this in this thread: "ive done it myself many times on minor trails, abls isnt "powerful" enough to stop your engine if you really juice it. when on minor trails ive found out that you have to feed it a bit and the abls will wither kick in or after a certain point wont do a thing, 1 wheel may spin or both." ...which reads to me that if it is working it only works in 'mild' conditions. Either Im missing something or these are conflicting accounts...?

No problem ...this forum has a lot of great people with good experience/knowledge, and a lot of people with the same issues. It has answered a lot of my questions...even before I had to ask some of them. I wish I had a digital camera or digital recorder, I could show you some of my "work"

I'm with you km. I'd like to hear from more members about their ABLS experience while off-roading. And if anyone has the locker yet?

I'm not ignoring you - but I'll have my truck in less than 2 weeks, and it'll get a proper shake down on my favorite trails. I'll have first hand experience after that, instead of just design knowlege and internet 2nd hand experience...

Limited slip late season-vs-VDC/abls current 2004

Hello,
Mic here in California. I am concerned when reading about all of the problems you guys out there on the East coast are having with your trucks in the snow? I have owned a 86 Hardody 4x4, then a 95 Pathfinder 4x4, and now finally the Titan 4x4. I have yet to get it into the snow with my Titan, but that is one of the main reasons I have 4x4 to go to Tahoe snowboarding.
So that is why I am concerned to hear all of this wheels spining freely and such in dirt and snow. Are the comments to this with the Titan 2x2 drive, or is this occuring with 4x4's as well? I see in the catalog that a " late season arrival on a LSD rear-end" and mine did not come with it. From a 4x4 standpoint, how much of this VDC if I read correctly is coming into play with abls and causing the truck to either lose power or control in these situations. Anybody care to guess how much work would be involved to upgrade to the new LDS when it comes out and how much would it probably cost-is it worth it? Finally, after owning all stardard shift 4x4's, is there anything I should be careful about when wheeling or driving in the snow with regards to the automatic trans and all that power. It seems like a lot of wild animal waiting to get out of hand in adverse conditions? Thanks for giving me some feedback on the new rig. By the way, I am extemely satisfied with the job they did on this truck, being a Nissan 4x4 owner for almost 20 years. cheers!

Ok, I was in some sugar sand the other day, dug the front in up to the skids on this small rise, Frame sitting on the sand, Front wheels spinning. Couldn't back off. wouldn't spin the rear at all. Just sat there. Kinda funny actually, we were looking to get stuck just didn't think it was going to be that easy. Had to get a tug from someone else to get me off. I had the vdc on then off then on then off. We laughed about and still laughin, Me and my big Titan stuck on a 4 foot sugar sand hill.

If your rear wheels wouldn't spin, something has broken on your truck. Possibly a transfer case problem.

Even without ABLS, you would be able to spin 1 rear wheel in 2wd and 1 rear + 1 front wheel in 4wd.

No rear wheel spinning, your truck = teh br0k3d!

Yea,, I'm going to have them look at it just to make sure. I am up to the 3700mile oil change and will be going to the dealer next week. Don't plan on doing much off road between now and then. It sure was a site to see.
