Yeap, you almost have to be superman to get that little oil filter off the first time. There was thread on it. you may want to do a search on that thread, but, it looks like Bubba put on all the oil filter at factory

Yeah mine was put on by the hulk, not to mention it is hard to get to with the off road package. It is a tiny little oil filter, I have seen bigger ones on 4cyl.s.

i actually think i pulled a shoulder muscle trying to get that filter loose, but alas i did. i actually tried to tighten it a little to get it to "move" and then i was able to get it loose. btw, i used a oil filter wrench that is designed for honda goldwing cycles. it fit perfectly. cost:$12 not too bad, but not the cheapest.

and your right it is a pain getting that filter off w/ the off-road pkg.

Surfing the site looking for just this info. Went to the dealer and picked up my $7.95 p/n oil filter 15208-9e000. Wanted to double check since this thing is a puny little guy. Can this be right???? Does anyone know of a different oil filter non-oem. I read the Nissan manual and it said only replace with Nissan oil filter because of some built in check valve that keeps the oil in the filter? The filter is upside down...pure gravity I would think keeps oil in it???

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I would think gravity does the trick, unless the oil flowing to the sump on shut down creates a siphon effect. I have the same tiny little filter. When I bought it I made the gal at the parts counter bring back the head service guy to confirm. It should come with a copper crush washer for the drain plug. Torque on the drain plug is 25 ft-lbs. It took me 7 quarts to re-fill. (Manual says 6.5) I think K&N has an oil filter, but I don't know if it is any bigger.

Shop around, I think mine was around $6 at the dealer, include a new drain plug washer. Internet prices are usually pretty good. Some dealers have a AAA discount as well.

I changed my oil with a Purulator Pure One filter and it is about 1-2 inches longer than the stock filter... It also has the anti-drainback, but with the filter being inverted low on the engine, I am not sure of the benefits... The filter was full when I did the oil change...

Someone asked for a non-oem filter number. I always use purolator with awesome results. They have a regular and a "pure one" both have the numbers are 14610 the pureone just has PL infront of it.
