The differential on my 1971 Corvette has been making horrific clunking sounds and constant grinding noises (very much noticable over the roar of the engine with headers and Flowmasters, so you can imagine how loud that is!) since the day I bought it in 1996.
It's been well over 50,000 miles. I've changed the gear oil once, and plan on replacing it, the engine and upgrading to a 700R4 transmission this winter.
Rear ends are pretty darn tough, or at least they should be.
