Is it normal to have a slight clunk when shifting from P or N to drive or reverse?.I just noticed it today after a long Sunday drive with my wife.Never hear or feel it while driving even from a complete stop.Only happens whenever i shift from park to Drive/reverse/or N..My 02ChevySilverado did this but twice as bad..Maybe normal drivetrain play?..Was just wondering.
My does it too, it's normal. To keep it from doing this, when you come to a stop, engage the parking brake, let off the foot brake, then place it in park. The next time you take it out of park, shift to N, R, or D, then disengage the parking brake. It won't clunk after that.
Lt. Sammy is right. I would just add that you should always use the emergency brake when parking on an up or down slope. Just remember to use the brake before putting the tranny into park. This takes the pressure off the Tranny. Otherwise you will be using the tranny as a parking brake, and soing this over a long period of time could cause damage.
My truck also makes a clunking noise when I go from Neutral to Reverse. It happens every morning after I drive to work and I back into a parking space. I come to a complete stop (flat area), slip into Neutral then reverse and then "CLUNK". Come back out of reverse into neutral and it clunks but not as bad, set the parking break and into park. It does not do it when it is "cold"...when I first back out of my drive. Brought it to the dealer...they said they had another Titan pull in, and it did the same thing. I think they are full of sh!t and plan on test driving another one just to see.
Oh yeah, but it does not do it when I go from Neutral to drive...that is a smooth as ice. I also post this problem a while back and I seemed to be the only one with this clunking noise/problem.

I guess my Titan is abnormal because it does not make that sound. Shifts smoothly every time. Looking at what is mentioned here regarding shifting in to these gears so it does not make that sound does not sound normal to me. I had a Jeep CJ5 before and it made that sound due to my universal joints on the drive shaft when it begins to wear out there starts to have some "play" in the shaft you can verify by getting a firm hold on the shaft and try rotating it both ways if you have some movement in any direction that could be the cause of the clunk. However I never had the time yet to look at the drive shaft on the Titan and am not sure what kind of joints are being used so what I am saying may not be applicable in your's or the Titna's case. However I do not think that is a normal sound to hear.
It is if you park on an incline and don't engage the parking brake first. Most automatics will do this to some extent, not always noticible. Do you park your titan on a steep incline/decline on a regular basis? I do.

The source of this post which is "Shleprock" never mentioned an incline he mentioned just shifting. That is not a normal sound when just shifting. Yes it is a normal sound if you park on an incline and do not engage the parking brake first.
And Yes occasionally some of the activities in my life require me to park on a steep incline, but not on a regular basis as you do. -Take Care!

Yes, I suppose I assumed that was the problem. Either way, he hasn't commented on it since. So we don't know for sure whether or not that was the problem. My Titan shifts just fine when parked on level ground, but my advice should still be applied to any parking situation. As skyhammer mentioned, it helps increase the life of the tranny and is just a good habit.
Not sure if this is the same issue Shlep is having, but to clarify my issue and maybe Shlep can chime in when he returns...I am not on an incline, I am parking in the flat area of the parking garage, and ONLY when the truck is placed into Reverse after it has been driven only five or 200 miles. In my case it would not matter if I was on an incline, flat, decline, or hanging upside down, I am not coming from the Park position. I am stopping (as if you stopped at a stop sign, in Drive), sliding shifter up into Neutral, and then continuing into Reverse (to back into a parking space) and CLUNK, as the trans shifts into Reverse. Then when putting back into Neutral, it makes the same clunking, but about half as much. Then from N, I set my parking break, and slide up into park, no noise. The shifter does not hang up, and the noise is not from the tranny, it is comingfrom the rear, around the differential. I went to the dealer once and they said it is normal...I plan to go down to the dealer and test drive one on the lot to see if it does what mine does.
Thanks for the info, but I have done that, and the the drive shaft does rotate a very, very small amount, but I do not know what is a normal amount of play and what is too much.

Besides rotating your shaft as you say there is slight play, also try moving it up and down on both ends you should not have any movement at all. By doing this it's not like you are going to fix anything but it would be something to tell the service advisor when you describe the problem to check if that is normal and give them an area to look at. That really sucks having problems like this on such a new vehicle. -Keep us posted and Take Care!!

Thats the same thing mine is doing,,Only after i drive a couple of miles and park(flat area no hills at all).Hmmm Time to make a call..
I took my truck in for an oil change, and to have to check a rattling from under the dash on the pass. side, and the Dealer's "taxi service" gave me a ride to work in the GM's Titan (LE, Nav., DVD - Very Nice those of you with the LE's) When he pulled into the parking lot where I work, I hopped out, and then heard the infamous "CLUNK" when he put it into reverse. When I returned to the dealer to pick my truck up, I told the service manager what I heard, and told him my truck is doing the same. He said it is normal, every Titan he has driven has done this and there hasn't been any TSB about it. Time will tell...
