A friend of mine and I are having a dispute about this. I told him I thought that a short block uses existing parts from the older engine. He says it's vice-versa. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

A short block includes the block, crank, pistons. A long block is the short block + heads. In long block and short block you still need to use some existing parts, oil pan, intake, water pump.
