Transmission Fluid

Ok, I did a search and didn't see my answer... Has anyone changed their transmission fluid to something other than Nissan's fluid? What about the castrol one? If the fluid meets the specs of the Nissan's fluid, why are they being so specific with the use of their oil?

I'm 99 percent sure no one has done enough miles to want to change it and no one has used another kind because of the potential to lose the warranty. the castrol J fluid will work but where can you find it? if you live in canada you can use regular dexron/mercon. otherwise, they want you to buy the nissan fluid because they make 9.50 on every quart they sell you. juma

I went to 2 dealers, and so far have scored 2 quarts. There seems to be more in my transmission than on all the dealer's shelves.

Im not sure how crucial it is to use Nissan's own fluid. But being a former Dodge owner and hearing the horror storiers of what was happening in some of the dodge models by just using a premium ATF vs. thier specific fluids sacres me into using only what Nissan recomends. I wouldn't belive it myself (or thought that a manufacturer would build such strange stuff) but it seems to be the case. Dodge made clutch plates in the automatics of some minivan and car models that would be eaten away by regular tranny fluid and just mess everything up (just search "dodge tranny" in seach engine, it'll pop up all over). Not that Nissan would do such a thing, but better a few bucks poorer now than than a tow hook home later.

Amsoil Synthetic ATF is what I'm using in my 2k2 Maxima and my 2k1 Dodge Durango. I've had no problems whatsoever. I plan on using it in the Titan as well.

Better wait until Amsoil comes out with a type "J" fluid. Otherwise you will be buying your Titan a new transmission. Can't be cheap. Even the Amsoil website recommends Nissan "J" ATF.

For those of you running Amsoil in the engine and diff., did you get any MPG increase? I am planning on putting the Amsoil in on Saturday.

How do you guys replace the transmission fluid without going to the dealership?

We don't even have a dip stick for the transmission and how do we know how much to put in?

WE do have a dip stick for the transmission. It is the one with the bolt holding it on. It is about 2 inches to the left of the engine oil fill tube.

drain out 4 quarts from the pan cold and then replace with the same amount. it will drain a little more than 4 so be sure to stop it at 4 to avoid guessing how much to put in. mark a couple of one gallon milk jugs at the 2 quart line and use them to catch the old fluid. do this change of 4 quarts about every 10k miles and the tranny will last 100k plus. juma

Bolt requires 10mm socket.

where can we purchase the special j fluid? does nissan have it readily available for purchase? Or can an equal substitute be found elsewhere?

I have reached the mighty 20K on the odometer and after my discussion with the Nissan customer service department, I chose to go with the Nissan trans oil. Apparently when they say, "Only use Nissan transmission fluid" they really mean it. Warranty voided if failure and they test the oil and find something different. So I contacted my local dealership and made the appointment to have the trans fluid flushed using that pressure machine. 11+ quarts later, it's done. Frush trans fluid is now in my baby. Of course it's the mandatory Nissan trans fluid. Cost?!? They wanted 12.95 per quart, I told them no way and to call around. They did and price adjusted the quarts down to 9.15 a quart. However, overall cost of a transmission flush is incredible I feel better knowing I got the original oil replaced. To bad I couldn't use AMSOIL.
