Did not have any noise or smoke or anything else...Just the paint being baked off.

I think it would be a good idea to check your differential fluid level. Also recommend draining and refilling to proper level. Check the drain plug magnet for excessive metal filings. That would be a good indicator of possible problems. Mine had some but not a lot. I would expect what I found to be normal for break-in. I had close to the same mileage as you but no whine. I checked because of Jet Tech's heads-up and found the level to be very low (couldn't touch with bent pinky).

Or just take it to the dealer, tell them about the whine and let them inspect and report.

Either way, I'd be very careful about this one based upon Titansurveyor's and California Titan's experience. TS's was almost brand new and I know Chris takes care of his Titan even though he puts plenty of miles on it.

Yeah, but how do you know he's the only one driving it?

CaliforniaTitan,

What makes us think that the new diff isn't going to go out also? If they haven't fixed the problem at the factory level then the one's we have gotten are going to be bad also. I hope they stay together, but I have my doubts. I checked my fluid last night and it seems to be fine. I will have a tech check it on Saturday when it goes in for the brakes.

Personally, I am hoping that the differential problems were restricted to those that had an unknown low fluid problem. I just checked mine yesterday and it is fine.

CaliforniaTitan, I forget, did you ever check yours before the problem occured?

PAgerdaddy,

Me and my wife are the only ones that drive the truck and she is our 'Baby'. We don't abuse her. Edit: Missed the photoshop fun you had attached.

TS,

As with anything I know of no gaurantees.

BWalker,

No, I had not checked my fluid. I read the post about TS's diffy and the next day when washing mine I looked under and saw the paint baked off and rust starting on the exposed metal. IT was the next day when I got home I got under the rear and the diffy was really hot to the point I wasn't going to touch it. It sat for 2 days before I had last friday off to take it to the dealer.

Chris

Titansurveyor,they never said why,right??

I have to agree with Titansurveyor,if they don't know why they broke, they will keep breaking.Did they ever say why your's went out at just 1000 miles??Is the factory just hoping it was low lube levels, and crossing their fingers?
My understanding-from you guys,(I don't know jack about diffs) is that the design of the Dana whatever is a proven one.
1)Could the Titan have too much low speed torque for it-the 5.6 is probably the most powerful stock motor it has been used on?At low motor speeds it puts out more torque than anything in it's class.Sure hope this isn't it.
2)Could the driveshaft angle be significantly different than other trucks?
3)Hope it was low lube levels.

I shouldn't have made light of your situation, Chris. However, I'm glad that
you are getting a brand new rearend rather than a cheap fix that might
give you more problems down the road. Your experience did prompt me to
check mine, and it was fine. I did find over 41 pounds of air in every tire,
so I guess I should take more notice of the info and experience that is
available here. Many of these guys are very anal about their trucks, and
that is good for the rest of us, as they will find things to check before
more of us start to have problems.

I don't think the diff. problem in any way lessons my opinion of the Titan.
If it turns out to be the fluid level as the cause, Nissan needs to tighten
up on their QC. If its the Dana design, maybe we should all do like those
brand loyal Chevy guys and go out looking for a 9" Ford rearend!

No offense taken Steve. I too hope its just a fluid issue. We really do love this truck!

Check your diff fluid pronto-I just did and found it to be low-couldn't touch the fluid with my pinky. I can't be more than 1/5 full if that. I will take it to the dealer tommorow to have them deal with it and cover my behind warranty wise, especially since I have had this truck for six months.

They never have told me what happened. The dealer said they probably won't either. I hope it was just low fluid, but only time will tell.

I greatly appreciate all the information and warnings to the low fluid levels. I just checked mine and it is low and its draining at the moment.

I'm contacting my dealers and corporate tomorrow just for record sake so that if something does occur later I can refer to their responses.

The paint is a little baked on the rear end do you think there is any damage?
