the low down on swapping gears

Allright so i went to a professional gear shop to have them check out my truck. The guy looked at it and thought it was a Dana 44. He then had the other guy take a look at it and he wasn't too sure so they wrote down the number on it and called Dana. They found out that none of their gears would fit it and it would have to be a nissan gear only which means that even if nissan had it it would be freakin expensive. I forgot what he said the difference was something have to do with 3 pongs instead of 2 or something like that. Anyways the moral of the story is if you wanted to swap out your gears it seems it would be pretty expensive and best to wait a year or so to see what comes out. I just don't understand why nissan just didn't put a true Dana 44 in there cuz there would be so many parts that would be so cheap.

Uh, well, if it is not a standard Dana44 Punkin. I stand corrected on another thread. It looks exactly like a Dana44, smells like a Dana44, feels like a Dana44, but I guess it is not a Dana44.

Call up Precision Gear and see if they know anything about it?

Maybe the housing is a D44, but Nissan just used a proprietary R&P and carrier. If that is the case, then you could change out everything, but maintain the housing and axles.

Yeah, it's too expensive for my budget right now. If it were a true Dana 44 then the guy said it's about a little under 200 for a new set of gears which seems like a good price. But it's not so oh well, probably best to wait it out and see what happens. I'm sure they will sell a lot more titans next year which means more aftermarket stuff.
