How to get out of 4wd on the road?

One time while I was stuck in traffice I thought I'd put it in 4wd HIgh just to get it moving since I won't normally use it till winter. Anyway, I did and it went right in. Then however, the construction flagman waved our line so we took off. I flipped the switch back to 2wd, but it wouldn't disengage the the 4wd. THis was on a highway so I didn't want to go too fast in 4wd. Still wouldn't disengage. I had to exit the highway, then as soon as I turned it went back to 2wd. It's like it needs the front and rear wheels to be spinning at different speeds to disengage the trasfer case. Is this the case with this truck. I've driven Fords that immediately can be switched on and off even going in a straight line on pavement. Anyone?

Mike, All of these electric shift transfer cases like to be under no load when they shift. It will shift in or out best if you aren't loading the gears...in other words, you are not accellerating or decellerating. Just hold you speed for a little while.
Stopping usually does the same thing, and turning on dry pavement is actually hard on things. Turning may have "unloaded" the gears and allowed the transfer case to shift, but I don't recommend it. You might try stopping and putting the truck in reverse...you probably won't have to move, but it should shift when you do that.
