rusty diff

what is ok? Mine is fairly well covered in rust. 1300 miles made in march o4.

kc 2 w/off road & tow. p.s. my diff is down by a finger and the oil is THIN, few shavings on plug. I have certified recipt that diff is ok. What do I do? Take it back and ask again? run till it fries and wave my paper in their faces?

the 2x4 version has a steele driveshaft so the rust is to be expected. Do a search and you will find that we have talked about this before. When you say "thin", are you talking about water thin?

You can fill the punkin ball to the level of the fill hole if it makes you feel better. There seems to be no adverse effects of doing this from what I hear around here. Be aware though for these types of gear sets its not necessary to completely immerse them for proper lubrication. Rather as long as there is sufficient lube for them to rotate into thats all that is necessary. Having a larger volume of lube that what is needed for lubrication prolly has benefits with respect to heat dissipation when towing near the maximum rating in hot climates. It can also accelerate seal failure in extreme cases.

There have been some threads devoted to finding a" baseline" range of temperatures that the rear end generates under a variety of conditions but the exercise kind of petered out.

If the rust is unsightly use some of that rustoleum rust converter crap and then paint it henna color. I just used this on some steel outdoor furniture and it works well. Don't know how long it will last on a 180 deg surface though

I think all the diffs are rusting, must be cheap paint. I crawled under mine last week and sprayed it with krylon, we will see how long it last, especially in the salty atmosphere i run in.

grab high-temp engine paint in black. If that doesn't handle it, then there's nothing you can do, lol.

Nope, not mine, had it since December. Changed to Mobil 1 75-90 at about 2K after finding gear oil level low, thanks to JetTech.

I have two on order from nissan . they will replace them but it will take pretty long to get the parts. I request the replacemetn before 3yr/36000 comes around

just got back from first oil change at 1500. Techie added a cup or so of diff oil. I feel better and I hope my "T" will as well. Since only my techie & I are the only ones to know about the drive shaft, I'll let it go.

I feel as long as the dealer takes care of the vehicle, I'll stand in goo stead when it comes time for a warrenty problem. Until then happy motoring.
