Finally Did The Fluid Switch.

Today I changed my oil. I switched to Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic. I also changed out my front and rear diff fluids. I switched to Mobil 1 75w90. Lets see if its worth the extra. The oil I drained from the engine and rear diff was black. The engine oil was 10w40 valvoline. The diff oil was stock. The front diff oil looked new. Just thought I'd post.

I am surprised a lot of people still using M1 5w-30 after JetTech posted hit oil analysis results.

the 5W-30 M1 didn't do well at all silver. It wasn't horrible but the 0W-40 easily kicked its butt in basically all categories.

All weekend, I went from part store to parts store looking for 0W-40 Mobile 1. All I got, we don't carry it here or no one will ever asked for it.

The local oil change shop wants $10.00 a quart for AMSOIL.
I have 500 miles until I reach 3000, I will keep looking.

why? I looked at the analysis and none of the numbers seem to vary significantly between the 5w-30 and the 0w-40.

JetTech, did you have a problem with the 5w-30?

FYI, I found M1 0w-40 at Walmart for $4.77/qt.

Advanced Auto carries Mobil1 0w40 and they have it on sale for $4.28/qt. Pep boys has a coupon sale for Mobil1 but they do not carry 0w40. You can also call Mobil and get the name and number of a Mobil Oil distributor. I had to do that when I was running Delvac1 in my VW TDI. They would deliver the oil to my office or I could pick it up for the same price.

I changed everything over to Mobil1 this past weekend. I had the oil drained and forgot to fill the bottle for the oil testing. I will get it on the next round.

I appreciate the testing information you provided JetTech. It made it simple to decide the grade of oil I should use.

OK, so you didn't leave it in as long. maybe I'm reading the results wrong, but they look practically identical to me. hate to be a nag, but how do you know it wouldnt' have done just as well? and why did you switch so soon? did you have problems using the 5w-30 ?

That's exactly what I am running right now, it is the recommended weight, no engine noises or any other problems.

mjw, those are all excellent questions and your not being a nag.....

The major difference comes from extropolating, perhaps not the most scientific form of guessing but it's more like an educated guess. The ppm's with the 5W-30 were at or near the readings that I got from the 0W-40 that had 3200 miles MORE on the oil. To think that if I ran the 5W-30 for another 3200 miles on top of the 2200 that was already on it, and expected the numbers to not increase or stay the same would not be reasonable or possible. So that's what I'm basing my current use and comments on with the 0W-40.

If your happy with the 5W-30 than by all means run it, I am trying to convince more owners on this forum to do oil analysis because it helps educate us all and gives everyone a factual reading on how a particular oil does in these engines. I dumped it fairly early from my engine because I was concerned as to how it would hold up to my constant redline runs everyday. That's when I put the 0W-40 back in it just for peace of mind at 6400rpm.

As far as what Nissan recommends for viscosity there is a little room to play, I believe the manual says anything from a 5W-30 to a 10W-40 depending on weather conditions.

Of course it's going to recommend the thinnest in the interest of better mpg's.

If I've possibly or even maybe convinced you to do an oil analysis go to this site http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ fill out the requested information and they will send you the sampling kits for free. The charge is $20 when you send the sample in to get tested and $30 if you want to get the TBN number, of which can help if your going to run the oil 5K miles and more...

Yeah, I think I will, there is a poster on another site that is an Amsoil rep that drives a lot of highway miles and regularly gets 8-10k miles per oil change, relying on oil sample results. I am curious to see how the results change as the engine ages a little as well. Thanks JetTech.

Could the 0w40 have had better test results just because the engine was a little more broke in. I would think you would have more contaminates within the first few thousand miles then the oil would clean up.

I have M1 15W-50 in my Titan. I'm waiting on a kit from blackstone and I'll do an analysis and post the results here. From jettech's recommendation and from the guys over at www.bobistheoilguy.com, I'll probably change to M1 0w-40 at the next change.

wellllllllll, that's probably stretching it a bit but you are on the right track with the assumption that analysis "typically" get a little better as the engine breaks in. Iron, silicon, copper, and lead levels do tend to drop as things wear in. Hard to say, but your thinking is most certainly correct.
