Trans flush

Anyone had a BG transmission flush before? I've heard a lot about it before and am thinking about doing it when its time to flush the tranny.

BG flush - is that a machine?? I've had'm. they work. problem is the "special fluid" we have. they'd have to clean their flush machine of all tranny fluid and load up with several gallons of the nissan J, then flush yours.They aren't gonna want to do that.v juma

my plan is to change out 4 quarts by draining the pan cold every 10000 miles. I've done it once.

I used the machine switch pump thing once on another vehicle.

The 4 quart switch is easy enough for anyone and I think it will do the same as a more mileage full system change. If you were going to do a full system change, I'd say between 30k and 50k would be the best interval. 30k if you tow and carry heavy loads and 50k if you don't.

the service manual describes how to use the running motor to pump out the whole system as you pour new fluid in. I've done that once on another vehicle and it works good too. but one slip up and you'll cleaning fluid from the driveway or garage floor for a week.

up front near the bottom of the radiator are two transmission fluid lines that go to and return from the tranny cooler in front of the radiator. you take loose the return line - it's just rubber with a clamp. put a drain pan under it or run another hose from it to the drain pan. make sure you got a 15 quart receptacle or you have to stop in the middle and dump it out. take out the tranny dipstick. Get 15 quarts of fluid ($150 bux, they are proud of that J fluid) open and within arms reach. put your funnel in the dipstick hole and have someone start the truck. start pouring in as fast as it will take it without flooding back out. when you are done, have assistant cut off the motor, and put the tranny line back together. I'd measure how much you took out and if you didn't get as much out as you put in, drain some more from the pan till you get it pretty close. or, you may need to add a little more. big thing to watch for is if its coming out quicker than you can get it in and the torque converter gets too low and starts a big whumpping vibration. if it does that, cut off the motor and pour a few quarts in to catch up before starting again. I think you can see the potential for a giant mess:>) I've done it by myself and another time with a surly assistant (spouse). I'd say it would probably go best with 2 close, mechanically inclined buddies. juma

Does the pan have a drain plug??

Juma,does the pan have a drain plug,or do you have to drop the pan?Many screws on pan(10 or so?).I know this is very lazy to just not go out and take a good look,but I'm not up to getting greasy in the heat right now(90 degrees in New Orleans today).Thanks,Charlie

I just had the tranny flushed on another vehicle at the QuickLube. They took off BOTH lines, engine not running (I think), and forced through 14 quarts.

I wonder if you couldn't just take a hand pump and do the same?

No, it was running. You gotta have it running to flush through the torque converter.

As an alternative to the other procedure above, you could take off both lines at the front and have one suck from a container of fresh fluid and the other one drain out the old. never done it but I'm sure it would work as well as long as you kept the intake hose covered with fluid. juma
