Differential Info

Aggie4x4 will be posting pics.

Length of the whole thing, wheel stud to wheel stud - 72"
Length axle flange to axle flange - 70.5"
Axle diameter - spline end 1.357'/34.46mm
Spline length - 2"/51mm
There are 32 splines on the axles.
Axle diameter - bearing end 1.56"
Axle diameter in the middle 1.44"
Axle length wheel stud to spline end 35.25"
Axle length spline end to flange end 34 5/8"
Housing diameter/seal diameter 2.875"
There are 54 teeth on the exciter ring for the wheel speed sensor
Axle length from spline end to bearing end (does not include seal) 31 3/16"
Differential housing, flange to flange 63 5/16"
Differential housing total length 64 9/16"
There are 47 teeth on the ring gear. (3.35)
There are 14 teeth on the pinion. (3.35)
Bearing diameter that holds the pumpkin in place, inner dia 1.964"
Pumpkin is 7" total length end to end (where the axles fit in)
There are 10 bolts that hold the ring gear onto the pumpkin
Ring gear inner diameter 5.5" (bolt face)
Ring gear inner diameter 5.925" (teeth)
Ring gear outer diameter 9" (teeth)
Ring gear thickness 1.638"
Ring gear thickness from bolt face to bottom of teeth 1.350"
There are 13 teeth on the spider gears - axles
There are 9 teeth on the spider gears - pumpkin
Pinion gear length 8 7/8"

I can measure some other stuff if anyone describes it for me, in detail.

Some things that I noticed:
The axles are decent. Not enough to hold a 700hp beast or anything but they are beefy enough for what most of us will do.

The spider gears are very hard, but they are cast somewhat poorly and you can see on the wear pattern that they are not smooth across the tooth at the ends. It would be hard to take a pic of but that is a spot that could be a problem area since there is very little contact area on the ends of the teeth on these gears.

The ring gear teeth are not that thick - 0.288". This isn't a whole lot of area for the forces used to engage upon. Granted the load is spread out along the length of the teeth, but it's not as thick as other ring gears I've seen.

The main differences I think we discovered between this Dana 44 and other off-the-shelf parts is that the ring gear is 9" in diameter and the axles have 32 splines. So ours is beefier.

The pumkin - differential, or center section - doesn't appear that strong. The casting is thin in some areas and my own opinion is that it is a potential weak area.

The infamous pin that holds the spider gear shaft in is indeed held in place with a drift pin and not a bolt. It is a hollow pin. Most stronger units use a bolt to hold it into place (that I've seen).

The next step is to take the stuff to Pyle Brothers in Baytown, TX and have them look at it and start getting a feel for what is out there and what they can find out. I'm hoping with a business behind me that we can start getting some parts made for our differentials. I want a true posi. But based on the gear measurements we are going to have to make due with what we have stock for now. More to come.

This will probably go down in infamy as a reason to avoid Titans from "the early years".

Thanks-the 2.94-guess on gears?

the head-thanks for the info.Does anyone know what the gears are for the 2.94? How do OEM's usually "make" different rear ends.Do they stick with the same ring gear 47 teeth and just change the pinion- 47 16 would be 2.937-about our 2.94??Anyone out there know the actual gears in the 2.94?
Does it look like there is any easy way to improve that hollow pin problem?Maybe a higher friction interference drift pin,or better a bolt we could thread lock in?
Thanks.Charlie

You can't just change one or the other, ring and pinion are matched sets.

Awesome info btw Head. Waiting for the picts.....

I think a 9" ring gear with 3.36 gears sounds pretty decent. I was expecting it to be smaller. Though I am still putting 400rwhp through a 7.6" 10 bolt in my Z.

So, out of the few toasted rear ends we've heard about on the Titan, does anyone know what the point(s) of failure has been? I know about the low gear oil level that was present early on, but it seems I've heard of several failures that weren't related to this.

A couple of those failures were talked about, but they never explain what failed, even though they were asked several times.

Interesting....Keane talks about diff failures.....the 06 I have came stock with the "new" heat sink aluminum pumpkin cover. Could be for a heat issue cooking off the fluid??

Combining that with the fact that they started out with 75-90 spec'd for the gear oil and changed to 75-140 synth, I think you might be on to something.
