If you've ever wondered whether it was worth it or not to change your rear diff. fluid, here is a good example why you should. Before/after pics of my drain bolt.
Yep that looks about right.I changed mine (both front and back) at 500 miles and I now have 4K.This weekend I changed mine to Mobil 1 and it again looked about like that.

has anyone shown these pix to nissan? What is their official stance on this? I know that there's gonna be shavings... that's part of the normal workings of a differential -- but this many? This often?

Yep, changed mine today at 2500 miles and it looked just like that, and smelled worse than any oil I've ever changed. Very burned. I put Mobil 1 75w/90 synthetic back in it. I'll check it in a few hundred miles, see how it holds up.

Yeah, but the amount of shavings is ridiculously high. If anything close to this level of wear keeps up there's not going to be much left of the diff by 50k miles. I really, hope this is just normal break-in, and the level of wear drops dramatically soon. Swapped mine out today at 1900 miles, and it definitely was alarming.
I have 8K on my truck. Just changed the oil the second time to Mobil 1 5w30 Syn. I asked about the diff fluid, and the tech informed me that Titan did not call for Synthetic, and that the synthetic diff oil would cause a clunking sound. I doubted him, and he showed me the specs and warning. Now I am really confused.

No clunking sound, changed to Mobil 1 synthetic 6,000 miles ago, btw, still have all of the original paint on the pumpkin too.

Never argue with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

That amount of shavings is nothing to be concerned bout especially since these are new trucks. I just changed my diff fluid in my 04 frontier at 7200 miles and it looked just like the above photo. Its amazing, some people drive there trucks well over 100k and never touch the diff but the failure rate isent really high.
I just hit 500 miles in mine, and I decided to do an early oil change and do the front and rear diffs. Engine oil looked ok, but kinda cloudy. Front diff looked ok. The rear diff was a whole different story. The factory oil was dark and smelled worse than any gear oil I've ever smelled. I'm definitely glad I took everyone's advice here and changed that out. I may change it all again at the next engine oil change if for no other reason than to see what it looks like. I'm hoping the Mobil 1 75W-90 makes a difference.
