Rear Diff fluid

Changed my Rear Diff fluid went with the Mobil 1 75-140(76oz and it was oozing over a little out the check/fill hole) when I pulled the drain plug I didn't find that many metal shavings but 1/4-1/2 of sludge/grease?? Is this normal is it some type of assembly lube that just settled to the bottom of the diff housing?? I have an build date of 01/05 got it with 60miles on it (40 were mine and the wifes test drives) at the end of July now has just over 6k. It has the finned cover that say synthetic 75-140 only. Should I be worried?? Went for a trip down the block and it seemed nice and smooth(maybe smoother than before could just be in the head though).
Thanks
Sean

Re: Rear Diff fluid

Cool just making sure I hadn't burned up my fluid and caused the sludge. Also did anyone put any sealant on the plugs?? I didn't but it looked like there had been some white sealant on it.

Re: Rear Diff fluid

Yes. I used Permatex, it was either High Temperature, or High Performance, Thread Sealant. I can't remember which. I think either would work fine.

Re: Rear Diff fluid

It's the high performance. I lifted the part number right out of the service manual and went down to the parts store and picked it up.

I don't use anything on the plugs, nor does the dealer . Just install em' dry (and properly torqued). You'll have a helluva time getting em' off otherwise.

Good thing cause after tyhinking about it I wasn't sure how I'd get the drain plug off without losing my fluid.

what's the torque spec on those plugs?

I didn't have any problem getting mine off the 2nd time. I used the sealant and hand-tightened without a torque wrench. Note that I didn't drown it in sealant, just put enough on there to get it down in the threads.

The object really is to keep it from leaking. If your method accomplishes that, then more power to you.
