Thanks...what are carrier bearings anyways? Just to give me a clue so I'm not stupid when asking.

Re: Truetrac in Titan - Review

Well, I'm not the best to ask but as far as I know these are the bearings the diff is mounted on. When your old diff is taken out it comes out with its own carrier bearings that are a PITA to disassemble. So it is easier and more reliable to just use the new carrier bearings. Hope my explanation makes sense Basically you will not need to explain that to these guys. When I ordered the TruTrac for my Nissan they hust said you need the new bearings.

Re: Truetrac in Titan - Review

No problem. Both the diff and bearings ran 576.41 plus shipping. There might be cheaper deals somewhere but these guys had them in stock so I thought what the heck...

Re: Truetrac in Titan - Review

I've been thinking of the TrueTrac. I have an '06 with BT and Off Road. They had to replace my rear end at 3,000 miles. The new one works fine.

But, I've been thinking about making the change to the posi rear. That would eliminate my locker, though (which I've used twice to get out of sticky sits). Does anyone previsously with a locker and now with the TrueTrac regret the decision?

Austin got rid of his locker in favor of this.

Re: Truetrac in Titan - Review

I talked to a Lemon Law lawyer last week. Answered a few simple questions she had.

All that has to happen is for the present diff to fail and it's all over. I've had one fail each spring since I've had the truck. Hopefully the 4 pinion will hold up better than the 1st 2. (2 pinion)

If not I can settle for a buy back, new truck, or just a cash sum. When I mentioned how much it would take to make it right, she said the case would be worth a whole lot more than that. No surprise right? They work on percentage. Well I'm not going out for a killing, I just want it right.

I wanted to do my homework in advance since this is my plan of action. I wanted to know what to expect. According to her, it's a no brainer, and they do all the work. Once it's fixed the 3rd time I just bring in my 3 work orders. No Downtime except for the repair.

Yep...I posted extensively as it was occurring. It didn't fail completely. It was drivable. I had major high frequency vibration between 52 and 58. The dealer went through a good series of diagnosis to determine the rear end was the problem (long story...tired of re-typing it). That was at 3,000 miles (2 months into owning it). I have 18,200 on it now.

Short story is...the rear end was replaced and the problem was solved.

I've had no rear end problems since. My part numbers are posted on the spreadsheet and it is different. I believe my current rear end is the 4 pinion and it is the locker (which I like having).

But... a posi would be nice.

What's strange is, I have two friends with '04s. One is a 2wd..never a problem with the rear end...the other, has a 4wd off-road (pre-locker - early production, 2 pinion) and he also never has had a problem...and he is pretty rough on his truck both off-road and on.

I think I'm going to run what I have for a while and see what happens. If I install a True Trac, I lose the warranty. I'd rather make Nissan get it right. If replacement rear ends continue to fail, I'm sure Dana will have to make adjustments to the design eventually.

Yea, the 4x4 locker made up a lot of the list so far.

I'm pretty much thinking the same way. If the diff keeps failing, I'm patient enough to wait for them to remedy it. I'd like to have a LSD. If the 4 pinion seems to hold out well and doesn't fail, I may do the locker in 2HI, 4High, 4LO mod. It wouldn't be the same as a LSD unit, but close enough I guess. On the downside, it would be a lot tougher on the diff. If I remember correctly, it seemed to go OK on Austin's 4 pinion for the short time he had it.

Re: Truetrac in Titan - Review

It's not strange that some people have no problems with their rear end.

MOST people don't. It appears to be a quality control problem from Dana...not all units are bad...it's not like the breaks. A few people have pointed to a problem with the spider gear.

Actually, you're right. But...it was a hassle for me.

Incidentally...the manager of the Nissan service operation that replaced my rear end owns an '04 Dodge 1500 quad-cab. He has replaced his rear end 4 times and said Dodge has a much more prevalent problem with it's rear ends than Nissan does.

Re: Truetrac in Titan - Review

So let me understand this correctly. I have an 06 XE 4x4 with no off road package but I want to be able to lock the rear diff for off roading or slippery situations. Is this Trutrac going to be able to do the same things as the locking differential? Meaning lock it for slippery situations?
