So I was out playing in the dirt nothing hard and then the noise from the rear... DAMN IT.... So I limp her to the dealership and drop her off.. it was after hours...
they call me this afternoon and started to explain that they didn't think nissan would warrenty another diff.. I was like another???... apperantly it has been replaced twice already... I bought my titan used with 12K miles on it..
it was replaced at 3K and 5K miles...then they started to explain that I had a lift and tires and just warning me the they might not warrenty it..(7in CST lift with 35's)
I explained that it shouldn't matter they sell new titan on there lots with lifts and tires and this is known issue with the rear diff..
also I am pretty pissed I have taken my truck off road twice and both times it has broken first the front diff then the rear..WTF???????
I love my titan and they way it look and everything but if I need to replace a diff everytime I get off the pavement then what is the purpose.. you know..
well nissan warrented my diff and should be fixed in a couple days but come on 3 rear diffs and 1 front diff... think there might be something wrong here...
its hard to believe that you could be that lucky for 1 truck to have that many failures....I have 35's and i hammer the throttle hard,,,,,nothing yet ......

He's not the only one who has had multiple failures. There are a few more. I am starting to wonder if there is something else wrong with these trucks that have multiple failures that is causing the diffs to go. What that would be I have no idea.

Well Toxman, and other did you guys ever find out if they are putting the same rear end's in the 06's yet? This is starting to worry me in terms of the long run.

We are tracking rear axle assembly part numbers in the failures survey thread. It appears Nissan may have upgraded the rear end for the 06 models based on the part number evolution. The relative number of failures still appears to be low.

Maybe I got a lemon???????????
Lemon maybe - as it is possible that some other component is causing undue stress on certain Titans' differentials, and this would explain multiple failures.
Multiple Titans, and multiple failures, I'd be a bit suspicious of forum trolls. Although some people are said to be struck by lightening more than once.
Abuse, nope - although I'm not into smok'n my $900 + ATs, (I don't "power brake"), that is nothing. We should be able to pull stumps with our trucks. Every single day, Nissan! It's a truck, not a Ridgeline.
Inept service departments - or technicians. Some technicians were not aware that when replacing the rear axle, they were supposed to remove a plug in the new axle's vent hole and replace with the old, or a new, one-way breather-valve. There is now a TSB to remind them - a.k.a the CRS TSB
Poor Design - on the 4x4 w/E-lock, member "Austin" states they have upgraded from 2 pinion to 4 pinion spiders gears. IMO this seems to indicates a legal admission of an inherent design weakness of this p/n.
But an improvement doesn't necessarily mean an admission of guilt, (especially since 99%+ Titans do not blow chunks).
But then again if I found out there were Nissan Corporate Trolls on here - trying to make us treat our Titans extra gently, I would not be surprised as this could save them a few million dollars, (if they do have a weak design).
Poor manufacturing of certain batches of Dana gears, including the batch that went to Nissan parts inventories. Very plausible explanation of some multiple failures.
Most Rear differentials are fine - Most of us, the extreme majority have not had any problems with our differentials.
However, if Nissan wants to ensure sales for the growing number of worried potential buyers, there is a very simple solution - stand behind the Titan.
Offer a retroactive 10 yr 250,000 mile unlimited drivetrain, or at least rear differential replacement. I'd bet at least 99.9% of us would never use it. So basically it's a win/win situation.
.
I don't think the 4x2's have as much of a prob...I have 2.94 which are not as stout with big tires or towing but i have have spun my 305/50/20's bald. I have never heard or felt anything bad in the back. The only thing my titan has gone in for is warped rotors
Jserman, just wondering if you have filed with the NHTSA for all of your failed diffs. This will hopefully put the pressure of Nissan to come out with a more suitable fix. So far there are over 30 reports on there. Your 3, would be a good contribution. Please post them here... Nissan Titan-NHSTA REPORTED FAILURES-of powertrain:driveline:rear differential unit:

Poor Design - on the 4x4 w/E-lock, member "Austin" states they have upgraded from 2 pinion to 4 pinion spiders gears. Is it just the e-lock diff that had the 2 pinion spiders, I have OR no e-lock, but I have had the diff cover off and I believe I have 4 btw the trucks an 04.

You could be correct, but not based on what Austin has said. But who knows on the units shipped previous to E-lock. It could be possible they were trying to make them extra strong. If you follow his advice on the linked post you could figure it out. http://www.titantalk.com/forums/463456-post314.html
btw for any of you that don't know Austin, he is the one that figured out how to re-wire the e-locker to make it work in 4-Hi and 2wd, for the Titan and was recently written up in one of the off road mags, for the circuit mods for the Nissan Fronty too.
