Surprise Downshift on Flat road

Just had this happen the last 2 days. Driving on an almost flat road, I was coasting when my tranny downshifted. I figure this because my rpms when up. Should this have happened? Also, i did not hit the brakes or the gas when this happened and was going about 45-55 MPH. It has happened twice in two different spots where the road is flat. Anyone else experience this?

Operating as designed. On a down slope with no accelerator modulation, the tranny automatically downshifts to engine brake. It's really a nice feature. There is however a limit, it won't for example keep shifting down to 1st to keep you from speeding up.

I understand that it downshifts on a downslope, but my surprise was that it occured on a pretty much flat strech of road. Maybe im just getting over concerned with nothing. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, if you've never driven a vehicle that automatically engine brakes, it can take a little getting used to.

Re: Surprise Downshift on Flat road

maybe it just seemed to be flat to your judgment but in reality it was slightly downhill, our trucks have really good bearings ( atleast mine does :-) )

Re: Surprise Downshift on Flat road

Im not sure how good the bearings are. I took mine in today for a noise in the front end. I thought it was a bad tire, turned out to be a wheel bearing going out. So here is a thought. I had nerw brakes and rotors put on 3 or 4 months ago. They told me then Nissan didnt think the Titans would be this heavy so the light brakes and light rotors would warp. So I want some input on this thought. Since I have a bearing(front) going out @ 20,000 miles are they not heavy enought for the truck. What else is going to go bad? Thanks for letting me vent....
