Well my 2006 VK is hurt , runs ok but you can tell something's wrong. I know in 2007 the VK had some changes VCT and it's not a turn key project to swap a 2007 or later VK into 2006 or earlier. I was toying with a performance build but would be 10k plus project. I was cruising the internet and found Driven Desire AKA Brennan Becker, he installs VK's in Xterra and Frontiers including Terribleone's Frontier. I noticed he swapped a later VK in a earlier Xterra ? Well I contacted him, very nice young man he said sure send me the 2014 engine harness I will move a few wires it will be plug-n-play. Well not only did he mod the harness but several sensor connections etc were broken when the engine was removed and he fixed those as well. The harness will be on its way back tomorrow, scheduled to drop off the Titan end of next week. Very excited to drive my Titan with fresh engine! Will update as project progresses. I think Brennan Could be a valuable resource for the Titan community.
OK Brennan @ Driven Desire modded the 2014 wiring harness and shipped it back and the 2014 VK is in and there were some small hiccups. the 2014 senors are 6 pin the 2006 were 4 pin need to get new sensors. the starter terminal was broken had to use the 2006 starter the 2014 intake was broken had to use the 2006 intake. Joe was to send me a tune with NATS turned off but after I sent him the ECU's info he replied the 2014 ECU was not yet supported and will have to dump the ECU software into a file and send it to Uprev, they will do their thing send it back and we can tune! In the mean time we need to get the truck running check for leaks make sure everything is OK. My mechanic has a guy coming over to program the 2006 keys to the 2014 ECU NATS will update.
This is great in for more updates.
Honestly though after all that I'd be changing that 2006 intake for an updated intake to get the full benefits of the newer engine.
Yes that is what I've read and I was planing on it but.........will the shorter runners on my 06 IM give me better low end grunt? If so that would be more fun around town and off road! 60 mph max off road , I'm not looking for top end just low to midrange torque. I'm not going to the drag strip , more like short course off road power band.
update: the 2014 VK is installed and runs great! however............the 2014 ECU is different than the 2012 the way it communicates to the gauges and transmission .( 2012 is the latest year Brennan has swapped into earlier Xterra's and Frontier's so this lucky duck is in luncharted territory) the water temp does not work nor does the tach, the tranny shifts hard real hard. when I got the truck home i installed a alternate 2006 ecu i had with the NATS turned off via UpRev , started it up and all the gauges worked but i did not drive it because that year ECU does not support the four pin A/F sensors (04-06 six pin / 07+ four pin) but was a very good sign! i just ordered a 07 ECU and will hopefully get here Monday. i will then read the ECU info and send it to Cajun Joe to make me a NATS off Rom to upload then hopefully when i start the Titan everything is as it should be less the oil pressure gauge. Brennan informed me that the oil pressure gauge will not work because prior to 07, 04-06 the oil pressure sensor was wired direct to the gauge and 07-12 communicates via can bus and 2014 seems like something totally different. i'm gonna look for a after market oil pressure gauge.
Update: installed 2007 ECU all gauges working! Tranny working! Misfire ? Thinking bad ECU no misfire with other ECU's. 2012 non flex fuel ECU ordered will update.
OK after a month of running down stuff I have a smooth running 2014 VK56DE VVT Engine in a 2006 Nissan Titan 2WD SE King Cab.
Here's the details, 2014 VK56DE VVT engine 20k miles purchased with engine harness and ECU. ECU would not communicate enough with 2006 truck, lost tachometer and water temp gauges and tranny did not shift correctly because 2014 ECU was communicating via can to those functions. was told to purchase an 07-12 ECU did not matter if it was 2WD or 4WD I am 2WD may be different if you are 4WD and that if I had Gas it had to be Gas not flex fuel, if I wanted cruise control it had to have cruise control. Hooked it up everything worked, well everything but oil pressure gauge after 2006 ECU communicated another way (can) to the oil pressure gauge I will add an after market gauge. I had to add the negative battery cable with the battery current sensor on it and wire it into the fuse box where the IPDM is. originally had some codes but after checking and cleaning grounds and found the main ground cable to the block loose and tightened it things started coming around. I have no lights on the dash running smooth! I want to give a HUGE THANK YOU! to Joe @ Cajun Tuning and Brennan @ Driven Desire. Brennan was instrumental in the success of this project I cant thank him enough! I also want to thank a Nissan tech that also helped me a great deal, super nice guy very helpful with stuff like putting my vin number in the 07 ECU for smog check and pairing my keys. also with checking stuff with the consult III and printing helpful info THANK YOU! And who said the dealer is the devil!?
