well finally happened to me o5 big tow off road, rear seal on left side leaking . taking to dealer saturday to look at, do they have fix for this or know why this is happening or just keep on replacing seals? truck only has 12,000 miles.
The fix is replacing the seals. The reason is fluid is getting hot and blowing them out I believe.
Do you have to remove or replace the axle bearings to replace the seals? Can you detail the steps necessary to replace the seals? I looked in the SM and they talk about removing axle bearings with a bearing splitter. Is this actually necessary just to replace the seals? Also, approx how long to replace one axle seal?
Yeah the fluid gets hot, but isn't the real reason the vents are only one-way and the pressure pulls the seals in? And if you modify the vent....put on a 2 way with a breath hose like an atv up to the tail light assembly or something you will void the warranty. Now who wants to get blamed that their mod blew out the diff? Come on Nissan....home plate is over there..step up big boy and hit it hard.

I've blown 2 and I think now a 3rd. Anybody else with high mileage (40k+)- heavy towing Titans blowing seals with the 2.94 rear-ends? Sucks driving to the dealer dropping off the truck, going out of your way...I know the dodges must have way more problems, but if I do the mod I feel I can fix the problem. After the warranty is up I'd recommend doing the mod.

Yeah, you have to remove the bearing and collar with a press to get to the axle seal. The bearing and collar will be destroyed and need replaced. It takes about 3 hours to do both sides at the most.
mine went as well, i got 17k out of mine. started leaking on the right side shortly after i did my first diff fluid exchange. i shouldnt have taken it to the dealer i took it too though. the service advisor i got is a young punk kid who made the mistake of parking my truck against the fence where i can see it from my work (i work at a car dealership right next door). i watched the truck not move all day. he told me it was in the air being worked on when in actuallity it was parked under the hot sun. then he tells me to come pick up the truck because they had to order the seals. so now its been a week and i just called him to see what the deal is, "oh the parts are on back order" ....
i doubt it. this sounds like a common problem on these. anyone else have issues with getting this seal replaced?
I just hit 10k and decided to rotate the spare into the rotation(screw the TPS) and noticed oil on rear disc shield and assumed when I had the under body oiled, the guy just oversprayed, but nooo, after reading your posts, I think Ill wait to put the new Mobil1 in the rear,THANKS for the heads up guys!!!!
OH yeah without a doubt. the axle's are just way too small for the truck. ive decided when the warranty does finally expire on the powertrain (assuming i still have the truck) ill be switching over to the bulletproof american axles. working at a dodge/jeep dealer, i see a lot of dana axles, and just about all of them, especially on the rams, have carrier bearing issues and axle seal issues. i dont know why everyone is obsessed with the name dana. they are crap axles. the 4x4 HD trucks use american axles and never have i see one come
in with any problems, even on the power wagon ram's with the b.itchin diff lock. i dont know what nissan was thinkin when they decided to put this axle in their full size truck when it should really stay in the midsize truck.
There is definately a problem with seals going out on the Titan. I bet if everybody goes and looks about 20% have a blown seal right now.
Going in friday. Right rear axel seal leaking. Just goes to show, it's always something. Just when you think you have everything fixed, something else goes. I was real happy for about 6 months, now this.
