Rear Dif Fluid Change Question

Can anyone advise me if it would be alright to use teflon tape on the rear dif plug threads when I close it up. I have some on hand. Or do I need another product?

Thanks to all in advance.

Re: Rear Dif Fluid Change Question

I didn't use anything on the threads when I buttoned mine up....come to think of it, I never have and I've changed rearend oil many, many times over the years....If you want to use it I don't think it would hurt anything.

Re: Rear Dif Fluid Change Question

Use an RTV sealer such as Permatex. The tape may not be the best thing to use especially as hot as the rear can get when towing.

Re: Rear Dif Fluid Change Question

I know from experience that Teflon tape and petroleum products don't mix. Especially when you heat and pressure.

Re: Rear Dif Fluid Change Question

Thanks you very much gentlemen for your responses. While I suspect Mr B is correct: no harm will come, I noticed it has a compound on the thread from the factory. Being a bit of a perfectionist, i will look for the high temp version.

Thanks again.

Re: Rear Dif Fluid Change Question

There is no need to put thread sealant on the diff. plug. The gear oil is not pressureized.
