22,000 miles on my stock '05. Right rear seal has gone out. Caught it before it totally ruined the brakes. I wondered if it's a temperature thing. Anyone else with a Titan in the cold far north with this problem?
Yep, me too...Stock 05 SE 4x4 - right rear 40k miles, but sunny SoCal
New to the forum but I've been reading alot for a few weks. Just wanted to let ya'll know that my right rear axle seal was replaced a few weeks ago under warranty at 25,600 miles. 2006 XE CC 2wd. Also, I made the report to nhtsa.
A Technical Service Bulleting was issued by Nissan on June 6, 2006. In essence, it reminds the local dealerships to remove the temporary plug in the new axle housing and replace it with the old breather/vent. The reference number is: NTB06-027a and refers to 2004-2006 Titan's. I just found out that mine was NEVER TRANSFERED TO THE NEW AXLE HOUSING. I have been driving around since mid-2005 when my axle assembly was replaced by the local dealer with NO AXLE VENT/BREATHER. Think this may be the reason for seals blowing and the diff's overheating? Wonder what else the dealerships "forgot" to do....
I changed my oil at 20,000 miles and inspected the whole truck for safety and maintenance. I saw no noticeable concerns. Today I took a look just out of curiosity at 22,000 miles and saw this. Time to pay Nissan a visit. I knew it would fail sooner or later. My dealer has been great to me so far. I don't think this will be a major issue either.
Hey. On page 11 i asked if anyone replaced the seal themselves. Since I couldn’t get the Nissan to change mine at 61,000 miles I decided to do it myself. Bought the new seal and took the axle out had to go the deal so they can take off the seal of the axle and put a new one back on. Put the axle back in the rear-end. Everything works fine no leaks since, it’s at 64k now. And a total of $250 for labor and parts.
I bought my 05' Titan new in Jan 2005. At about 18 months we noticed the emergency brake wouldn't hold. The Nissan dealer said it was set at factory specs. After several more trips to the dealer was told the same until a service writer finally had someone actually LOOK at it. A rear seal was leaking and it had dissolved the brake pad. They fixed it without incident. This was about six months ago and so far no more leaks. After seeing this problem reported so many times in here why hasn't Nissan done a recall?
Other than this incident we've used our Titan to tow a travel trailer numerous times including out of state without any other problems. It's driven daily and performs quite nicely.
Sorry for the redundancy if so.. I have an 04 KC 4X4 with 70k miles, new to me this summer with 58k miles. Noticed some leaking when I changed the oil yesterday. Question for some of you who have the seals fixed w/out getting a whole new axle. How long has the repair lasted or was it just a bandaid until it leaks again? Taking it in on Monday to the dealer I purchased from for them to have a look.
After having both rear axle seals replaced, I replaced the OEM check valve rear axle vent with the hose vent mod and have had no further seal problems.

I hope you reported it. Your's was a safety issue and should be reported. Safety issues lead to recalls.

Two questions for folks (especially for those who have had failures):
1. I wonder how much of a correlation there is between leaky seals and a complete rear end failure? (have those with complete rear end failures--found leaking seals at the time failure or are they completely independent quality issues)
2. Do seals leak very gradually or once a leak begins will it often quickly get worse, resulting in much lower rear diff fluid level thereby causing the rear diff to fail sooner? (would a person be better off to ignore the leak and avoid seal replacement in hope of getting new axle/new diff down the road?)
