I guess this is two-part comment/question from me:
Is it correct to assume the rear axle seals are leaking diff fluid? If the leakage continues for sometime, going unnoticed, one would assume the diff would fail shortly thereafter.
Guess what..another blown rear axle seal. This is my 3rd seal, twice on the passenger side. I'm going for whole new rear end this time..enough is enough. Looks like I will be without the Titan for New Years, might have to upgrade.

IIRC, somebody else posted about a defect with the housing causing seal failure, requiring complete rear axle assembly replacement.
I have a 2004 Titan 2wd CC with 38,000 miles. At around 19,000 miles, the left rear wheel seal started leaking. I took it in and for some reason , the dealer had a heckuva time getting the replacement seal in - but they did. About 3,000 miles later, the right seal started leaking. I took it in and mentioned to them that there must be a reason for this, and my best theory was that the rear axle was in the process of coming from together to apart.
After a day or so, I got a phone call saying that the new rear differential, housing and all, was on the way and that it would be in the shop a few more days. Basically, they agreed with the theory after noting the significant metal shavings in the rear diff fluid.
So, to my way of thinking, the problem isn't the rear seals, its the rear diff putting out metal shards that in turn rip through the seals. Basically, the seals are acting as an early warning system for rear diff failure.
I would like to buy a used 2004 Titan for my son, but no way will I touch one that hasn't had the "fix" applied. By the way, I am looking at used Titan's because the price decline is so great. I figure I can dilute the pain of mine depreciating so rapidly by taking advantage of someone elses pain.
Just noticed a leak in my rear passenger side last week, got it in the dealer this morning. They called me an hour after I dropped it off and said they are going to replace the rear end.
Sure am glad I got the extended warranty, truck has 63k on it. From the looks of things it's been leaking a while, probably started before it hit 60k.
Just found my 05 passenger side leaking last night... Can somebody do another summary of nhsta reports? I searched 04-05-06 model years and only came up with 36, not sure if I'm doing it right cause there site is a PIA! I'm sure I'll need the ammo with my dealership since I''ve got a lift. Guess it'll be dropped off tonight or tomorrow!
