Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

Man I feel really lucky when it comes to this issue. I even had the Truetrac installed and still no leaks.... yet (fingers crossed). 14k miles and counting....

Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

i am convinced that the leaks are coming from the pressure build up inside the axle, both vaccum and release. the one way little crap *** check valve that nissan decided to use for a vent valve may be doing an ok job at releasing pressure, but what happens when the diff cools down and all the pressure inside has been released? the check valve is not letting air back in.... all other trucks have a hose that runs up under the bed, why not the titan? i ran my own vent tube up to the fuel tank. we shall see if this has any effects on the longevity of my axle seals...

I believe that the Tundra's have the same set-up as the Titan. I know GM has the hose that vents somewhere near the gas fill cap. You're right, this could be the problem.

Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

My Passenger side seal blew out at 13k and now I see that the driver side seal has blown as well at 17. Taking it in next week to get it replaced.

Unhappy Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

I was lowering the spare tire this morning to add some air to it, and I saw this… Could this be an indication of the axel seal going bad? I have not posted anything for a while since I thought I got most of the problems fixed, and was just trying to enjoy my Titan. I was thinking about getting a travel trailer this summer, but it never realized. I haven’t towed anything, yet, and my Titan currently has 12,500 miles on it.

I’m planning to take my family down to Port Aransas next weekend in my Titan, but should we take my Wife’s minivan instead? I will definitely call the dealership on Tuesday, but I’m not sure they could do anything about this before the next weekend. I hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend!

Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

While the "Seal Issue" may be valid, consider the two largest causes of leakage from differentials.

Overfilling
Lack of Venting

When checking the differential for fill, the vehicle should be on a LEVEL surface. The fluid should be just below the fill port, not flowing out.

The vent should be checked frequently to make sure it is not glued shut from mud and road dirt. (Personally, I am changing mine to a vent tube that will be routed up alongside the bed)

Oldfordowner,

I have changed the final drive oil twice myself, but I'm sure I did not overfill, and the vehicle was on a level surface (my garage). However, I have never checked the breather vent. But the axle has never been through water or mud... and not much moisture to speak of based on the weather past year in South Texas...

Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

Add me to to the list, but I had a Truetrac installed about a month ago at 14000 miles. My driver side rear seal is starting to leak. I reused the old seals, when I should have read the service manual first and had them install new seals with the Truetrac. My breather vent looks ok.

Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

Just happend to be under the truck today and noticed something greasy on the left rear plate behind the brake disc.. Guess my seal is leaking. Went ahead and submitted a report to the NTSHA.. Until now I was not aware this was issue with the Titans.....

Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.

I just had one replaced. I installed a vent tube on my axle back in February or March. I ran the rear end about three months without any venting after a rear end repalcement. The techs forgot to put the vent on the new rear end. I suspect this is why mine failed.
