I too had to use channel locks to get the filter off. I always tighten filters hand tight so i can use my hand the next time. But the next time i had to use channel locks again. Something about this filter, it tightens up on its own. The main problem is there is not enough room to really get a grip on it.
What the real problem here is the filter location. I've fabbed a bracket to remote mount the filter. The bracket mounts to the pass. side engine mount (drill 2 holes) so that it can drain into the same pan as the engine.
I'm thinking of making a bunch and offering them on here.

Always hand tighten the filters...otherwise you'll have a big mess, and possibly a lunched engine if you use a wrench.
Most cartridge filters will draw tight on their own
I had to use a big pipe wrench to get mine off the first time. Channel locks weren't doing it for me. It was a little tough fitting it into position, but I only need a small amount of swing room to break it free. They definitely overtighten these at the factory.
I do love the little oil drain chute. It works well, but is hardly innovative. My wife's 2000 Expedition has one, albeit plastic.

Once again..I repeat...never tighten the filters with a wrench...the engine will then draw the filters up, splitting the case. If this happens in your garage, you'll have a big mess, on the road, you'll have a big expense.
At 60 MPH, you'd be amazed on how fast 7 quarts can be pumped out of a split filter.
Whatever method used at Nissan to install filters on new engines is unknown to me, but I can't believe a wrench is involved.

Dude,
I needed the pipe wrench to remove it.
To install, I use a breaker bar.

I'm thinking I'll be lazy and let the dealer change my oil on the new titan for a while. But I must ask:
1. Did I read it wrong above, is their some sheild I have to remove to get to the filter??
2. I also saw somewhere that you have to put a new crush washer on the drain bolt every oil change???
