Question regarding Walmart (Supertech) synthetic

Walmart obviously isn't manufacturing their own oil...so my question is who is the manufacturer and what quality is the oil?

The supertech claims to be a full synthetic and is about the same price as some of the name brand conventional oils so which one is likely to provide better protection over the long run? I like to change my oil every 4k to 5k miles so it doesn't make sense to me to spend the $ for Mobil or comparable since I am not running the oil that long but if I can run synthetic without tripling the cost of a typical oil change it doesn't seem like a bad idea. Any suggestions?

Re: Question regarding Walmart (Supertech) synthetic

GoogleWhore to the rescue:

WalMart is known to use at least two suppliers for their "SuperTech" brand motor oil: ExxonMobil back east and parts of the midwest, and Warren Performance Products in most other areas. There is evidence that in some cases SOPUS has supplied motor oil under the SuperTech name, too, based on the use of jugs that are physically identical to those used for certain Quaker State and Pennzoil product and an identical alpha-numeric product/date code format stamped in the jugs' bottoms. So far as anyone has been able to tell from UOAs, SuperTech motor oils are good performers, though I can't say they particularly stand out in any category. As for SuperTech oil filters, that question would be more properly addressed to BITOG's oil filter discussion forum. I can tell you that they're made for WalMart by Champion Labs and contain a synthetic blend media. I've used them consistently in the past and never had any problems with them.

Re: Question regarding Walmart (Supertech) synthetic

FYI My rear end went out less than 1000 miles after switching to their synthetic gear lube...I think it is coinsidence but I won't use their gear lube again.

Most agree that their oil and filters are great bargains.
