The problem isn't left-to-right speed differential, but front to rear. This has been covered many times on this forum.

Now running 150miles on dry pavement highway speeds? Unless there is reasons of Needing 4x4 I would not recommend it. Due to well higher gas consumption
Running in 4wd actually won't affect gas mileage much, if at all, with our trucks. All the drivetrain components are rotating whether it's in 2wd or 4wd.

The short of it is don't run in 4wd if you don't feel it's necessary. There's no need to "prepare" for situations by engaging it miles before you have to or leaving it engaged during extended dry driving periods between slick spots.

Don't turn on dry surfaces that don't allow sufficient wheel slippage while 4wd is engaged.

Rain doesn't count as sufficient.

Roads don't instantly go from not needing 4wd to requiring it or you'll be stuck...unless you're headed straight for a 4ft snow drift.

Just use common sense.

If you have "a few miles" of dry road then take it out of 4wd, it's not that hard. Just twist the knob.

I'm trying to figure out the difference on this one. If you are going through the snow and you are taking it easy causing the front wheels to roll only (like normal driving),whats the difference in rolling through the snow and rolling on dry pavement if your going slow?

Snow allows wheel slippage when the drivetrain loads up, dry pavement does not. Fast or slow doesn't matter, it's the friction between the tires and road that's the enemy.

Re: 4x4 on dry pavement,Not!

Alright, I'm a dummy and drove about 10 miles and took about 8 turns. I did this on Saturday and noticed it was hard to steer turning into the store, thats when I turned off the 4wd H. Just today I noticed a little leakage on the inside of my rims. Am I screwed? What did I hurt and can I fix it myself? I could have access to a lift and air tools.

Thanks for any help.

Does your 4 wd still work? If its on the inside of your rim it might be an outer CV boot.

Inside of which wheels? Front or rear? It'll be different things depending on which end. That said, running in 4wd shouldn't cause this unless it's coming from the front-diff and somehow getting on your wheels.

The front CVs are turning whether you're in 4wd or not so if the CV isn't busted and the boot is torn then that's just coincidence. If the rear axle seal is leaking then that's also coincidence.

Any pics or more info you can give?

the other main reason is too off road
4 wheel drive wont help if all four wheels are spinnin!

Sorry man no pics today, but I think I got lucky anyways. 4wd still works and I haven't seen anymore leakage on the front rims. Thanks for the help, if something comes up I'll post a big warning out there for evreybody. I really only did about 10-15 miles going slower than 60mph, its just the 90 degree turns on dry pavement that worried me. We'll see how it goes from here?

Re: 4x4 on dry pavement,Not!

Jason you will be fine. No it's never good to run 4wd on dry pavement but unless you really beat on it you most likely won't hurt anything if you go a short distance. I have done the same thing a few times in all my 4wd vehicles and have never had a problem. Any damage would happen when makeing sharp 90* turns, like into the store. Straight driveing even through twisties shouldn't hurt you. If you would have broke something you have known it right away because when a 4wd system brakes it usually nice and loud.
