Need Help With New Problem

Right before my rear axle was replaced I started to get a thump upon hard take off that is directly under the center console. There is about 3 solid thumps that make the console shake. After the new axle was installed I am still getting this thump. I figured the U-joint is going out because there is a small amount of movement in the front one but not the back. I took it down the the dealer today and the service tech said that the u-joint play was considered normal after he inspected it. He feel that it is axle wrap. I have never had this problem until my rear diff was going out. I looked for loose bolts/brackets, and cant find anything loose down there. Any suggestions?

Re: Need Help With New Problem

No it was a real quick look he took. I looked at it and checked that drive line as well and everything seemed real solid.

Re: Need Help With New Problem

Backlash in the transfer could be the source as well, might be worthwhile to have them take a measurement

Re: Need Help With New Problem

Anyone else have any input? I am sure that this was onset by the last rear going out. I have never had axle wrap, even before the rear deavers. I am pretty sure it is where the top of the driveline enters the rubber housing and where the shiny polished part of the shaft is. Is this the slip yoke?

Re: Need Help With New Problem

Based on your description burly, this is something different than slip yoke. GM 1500's are known for their slip yoke. When driving you can let off and then hit it again and there will be slight hesitation and it will like something slid and hit the back of the box.

Unless it's scored, a slip yoke won't make noise...the problem is in the driveline....My 04 KC had a problem with excessive play, clunking everytime I took off from a dead stop. I traded it off 7 months after I bought it without having the problem solved, as I need more interior space.

Should the shiny part of the shaft look brown and have burnt (brown dry crust) marks on it?

Man that sounds horrible! Lol

Re: Need Help With New Problem

So I had a friend take a look at my truck as a favor. He works as an mechanic and he knows his stuff. He found nothing loose, no engine mounts, bolts, or brackets. He was able to verify that it is not axle wrap I am having with my Titan. He narrowed it down to the transfer case, or the slip yoke. He believes that the slip yoke splins are worn out. Any one have any ideas of how I can convince my dealer that it is not axle wrap like they say it is. Since the problem started once the last rear diff was going out (bad leak and no diff fluid, and a seperated bearing), could this have caused to much stress on the driveline and caused the teeth to wear out on the slip yoke?

If the slip yoke spline is worn out, you will know soon enough because it should start jumping teeth and sound like a ratchet and eventually just spin in place.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I should just keep hammering on it then at see if I cannot make it go out all the way. What ever it is, was not there before so it needs to be fixed.

Re: Need Help With New Problem

It turned out to be a torn tranny/transfer case mount. I am taking it in tomorrow to have the new part ordered. My buddies explanation was "too much nuts and not enough sack". LOL
