engine brake or downshift?

I just got my Titan, so I'm still learning. It seems that when my foot is off the accelerator and I'm on fairly flat or downhill road, the engine either brakes or the transmission downshifts. Which is it? I really like the feature, I just want to know how it works. Thanks.

Re: engine brake or downshift?

Ahh. It felt like a engine brake. I didn't know it was the VDC. I thought that only came into action when there was a problem. Thanks for the info.

Re: engine brake or downshift?

I had noticed that when going down a descent grade that the truck will keep close to the same speed when you let off the gas. Great feature. Keeps you from looking down at the speedo and going WTF, how fast am I going?

Re: engine brake or downshift?

It is engine braking, nothing to do with VDC.

Re: engine brake or downshift?

I have always thought it was an annoying. I hope that it is actually a feature rather then a problem. It happens often when I am just starting to go downgrade at appx 60mph. It automatically downshifts. Sometimes my foot is still on the accelerator and it downshifts.

And it is always at the same spot on the same downgrade. I have to force myself to increase the speed slightly to avoid this strange occurance.

Re: engine brake or downshift?

Trust me guys, on this truck, it's FAR less annoying than on other vehicles. My 300M did it too. If I got too much speed while in cruise or something, it would downshift to try to keep the speed within 5 MPH of the cruise setting. This truck does it too, but with the sweet driveline and the smooth shifting tranny, it's a LOT less obnoxious than the Chrysler was. And don't even get me started on how sh1tty the company Chebbie Colorado shifts! What a pig! That 5-cylinder is a POS! Not only does it downshift and upshift constantly while in cruise, but it does it on the slightest of grades and it clunks like somebody pushed a clutch in manually! It jerks you all over the place when it does it. There's not enough power for it to pull the truck when in overdrive and it shifts at the slightest incline. What a piece of junk that thing is. Ok, so somebody started me up on it... Rant off.

I had an 01 S-10 and it would do this a very little bit especially if I hit any type of grade at a low speed. Maybe It's just me telling myself that to give me an excuse to go faster. Either way the new Colorado's suck.

^^^^What he said.....

I think Chebbie missed the boat. The 5-cylinder in my lady's Volvo has more punch and verve than that Chebbie unit.

Re: engine brake or downshift?

It is called Hill Control Logic, and the trans is down shifting to keep the speed down, going down hill
