Call me Stupid but I have a dumb oil question.

I have read almost all the posts about synthetics and haven't really seemed to get a deffinate answer to my questions. Or it seems to good to be true. First of all, how long can you run this oil without changeing it? I've heard 7,500miles, 10,000 miles and all in between. If it is one of those numbers, how often do you change the oil filter? Next, if you change just the oil filter, approximately how much oil will that let out? Is there a local place (Phoenix, AZ) that I can send an oil sample to? If not then what is the closest that anyone knows about?

Oh and by the way I just put in Mobil 1 in both my truck and car.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Call me Stupid but I have a dumb oil question.

My boss at work, I work in an Industrial lubricants laboratory, puts Mobil 1 in his cars yearly. He would change the oil and filter in November, then change the filter in May and top off the oil. He checked the oil every month and added if needed. He generally went about 20,000 miles per year with this, and had a Dodge Caravan with around 165,000 miles and a Chevy Sprint with about 235,000 miles. He sold the Caravan to his brothers painting company. They had an engine test done and the worst cylinder still had 94 % of its pressure! That was the 4-cylinder Dodge had in the original, square bodied, Caravans.
The real answer would depend on your warranty. If you did this and had an engine problem, they would likely not cover it if you couldn't show at least the 7,500 mile oil change. That is what I do now, at least until the powertrain warranty is over. I haven't decided if I am going to go to 15,000 miles yet, since I pull my boat around all summer. I spend about $85 twice a year for oil, filters, diff. oil, etc. for my Titan.

Re: Call me Stupid but I have a dumb oil question.

So it is ok to go 7,500 on an oil change then? How often do you change the filter?

Thanks for the info

I have a BMW that uses Mobil 1 synthetic and recommended oil changes from BMW are every 25,000 kms or 15,500 miles(rough conversion). 5,000 miles and the oil barely used. It's mostly the filter that cannot last that long.

Re: Call me Stupid but I have a dumb oil question.

I use Mobil1 0-w40 (fully synthetic) and I change the oil and filter every 5k'ish miles.

Thats probobly overkill but it gives me peace of mind.

Just change the filter every time you change the oil.

Re: Call me Stupid but I have a dumb oil question.

Seems like Amsoil recommended you change your filter every 6 months regardless of mileage. The max I would go with Amsoil would be 10000 miles or one year with their full synthetic oils. You might go longer with oil sample analysis. By the time you pay for the oil analysis, it would be more cost efficient to just change the oil.

The new AMSOIL EaO filters are 25000 miles or 1 year.

OIL ANALYSIS:

Free kit shipped to you, you pay 20 bucks when you send it in. Do it for knowledge of your engine, not just to skip an oil change.
