Spark Plug Replacement

Anyone know when we should change our spark plugs? Also the best type, gap clearances, etc?

Re: Spark Plug Replacement

I bought a set of NGK Laser Platinum Premium PLFR5A-11 stock no. 6240 from the sparkplugs.com guy that sponsors the forum. I plan on putting them in about 60,000.

Re: Spark Plug Replacement

The stock double platinums are good for 100K. You can change them earlier if you want to. NGK is the OEM plug brand.

Don't forget to add anti-freeze to your headlight fluid

Re: Spark Plug Replacement

When it comes to sparkplugs for todays engines, I highly recomend the factory original replacement. I'm talking about manufacture and part number, but still getting them somewhere else other then the dealer to save some scratch...
Todays engines are so speacial built and the plugs are also, if you got 60-80K out of them, why replace them with something thats supposed to fit?

Well, what would be so different if they are of the same class, heat, size of course. Designed to the same specs. Bosch vs NGK vs Champion? What is going to go wrong if listed as correct. What if a "better" plug comes along, made with noxitanium for even longer life. Nissan doesn't make plugs, if buying NGK, I'll buy NGK elsewhere. If it works, it works. It's just a part number.

Although changing the type of tip (1 vs 3 electrodes for example) may not be beneficial, I don't feel locked in to the OEM brand only, on spark plugs.

Everything is special built, always has been.

I must say though, from 20 years ago, we only use NGK on our ONAN generators, as Champions (?) that were OEM fouled too easy, and ONAN changed brand to NGK later! That has mostly to do with bad ONAN designed engine, not bad plug design. The oil shouldn't be in there to start with.

If you re-read my post you will see where I stated to use the correct manufacture of the factory plug, and the correct part number...and not to buy it at the dealer to save money...

By the way, what do you mean waiting for a "better" spark plug?

Yes LouFish, I simply misunderstood you there. As soon as I saw you had responded, I reread and understood as intended. I agree.

As for a "better" sparkplug, that is just a hypothetical/rhetorical thought. I don't think a better plug is going to happen anytime soon, but if a real change happened and produced 2 hp more and lasted 500,000 miles or more. I'm not holding my breath for it though. I don't believe all the claims for so many "miraculous new designs" that seem to get rehashed every year. I simply change at 50,000 with OEM spec or compatible premium brand (Bosch, NGK).

Yeah, that's what I was getting at, there are some who still believe there's some magical plug out there...
