Question What is this? Solenoid in console shifter?

Maybe someone can answer this...

I noticed the other day while driving with my hand on the shifter that there is some sort of solenoid that is activated/deactivated around 5mph as I can feel a "click" in the shifter when I come to a stop and then another after I get going.

I'm assuming this is a reverse lock-out solenoid/actuator but I'm not brave (dumb ) enough to try putting it into reverse while going forward.

Can anyone confirm this?

Yep, keeps you from throwing it in reverse until under ~5mph. It's the same solenoid that prevents you from putting it in park or drive without the brake pedal being pressed. Mine's kinda "clicky" somedays, others I can't hear it at all.

Question Re: What is this? Solenoid in console shifter?

Hello, I just bought a blue 07 titan se, and noticed scratches all over the top coat , I checked other blue and dark colored titan trucks and they have these scratches too. My dealer has been some what helpful , and of course offer explainations and buffed the truck out. This didn't help .And now Im swapping it out for a lighter color titan. My other concern is the solenoid switch, because mine clicks or makes noise every stop, My Question to the board is , is this to be expected on all the floor console shifter titans and is it fixable. IT really is annoying as hell. Does any one have any ideas, Im going to swap trucks soon, and thinking of going to the column shifter XE model. Its been very disappointing experience, especially since I like the ride and looks of the rig itself.

I thought they would have fixed the click problem by now. My '05 (less then 8 ,000 miles) only does the click thing on very cold days (10 deg. or below.) Sounds like they need to isolate the soloniod better, or provide a better one that does'nt click in the colder weather. I don't know!!!

I have an '06 and after reading the previous posts I tried driving with my hand on the shifter. I can feel a little click in the selenoid but I can't hear it. Maybe they have addressed the problem. However, I should mention that my Titan has never seen the cold temps mentioned here. Where I live, it only dips below freezing two or three times a year and then only for a few hours. We never get temps of 10 degrees or below.

Re: What is this? Solenoid in console shifter?

Yep, my 06 does that too. I asked the Nissan Tech at the meet this last weekend about the console click, and he said it is normal. In some Titans the noise is easily heard, and in others it is not. (Obvious by the posts above).

They had a TSB on the Altima for the same thing.

Re: What is this? Solenoid in console shifter?

That is what I was going to do, use a pad of rubber to isolate the solenoid. I think the clicks are loud cause of being attatched to metal bracket. I have the click when I hit brakes as well as the one being discussed.

Re: What is this? Solenoid in console shifter?

I have the same thing...was browsing the posts to see if this common, which it seems to be. It can be annoying in slow traffic/traffic lights.

Hoping its not something that will get worse over time...as my warranty is just about up.

I have the floor shifter.

If you know of a fix, please PM me. Thanks!

I've never heard or felt anything. Had to go try it after reading these post. It's just fine. It's an 06.
