Another rear axle seal replaced
'05 CC 2WD. Left rear axle seal started leaking around 20,000 miles. Finally took it in just before Christmas and was told, "Yup, you got a leaky seal there. We have to order parts so bring it in after the first of the year." So, in it went on the 2nd for the repair and also for a leaky power steering line and a transmission cooler line they found during an oil change. Service writer said the seal replacement was a huge job and they would need truck at least two days! Did give me a loaner though. When I picked up truck I discussed the issue of the housing vent being a check valve and not a breather. The service writer just looked at me funny but the parts guy overheard us and piped in that he couldn't believe that there could be enough vaccuum created to cause seal failure. He said they have only seen two seal failures. He didn't have a replacement vent for me to examine but felt putting in a hose with a filter on it would be a good idea. I am going to get something in writing from the service manager stating my warrenty will not be voided if I replace the vent with a true breather then I will do the mod. I just completed reporting the seal failure to the NHTSA. Thanks to all on this fine site for all of the good info gained.
