I had my 4wd locked in high the other day when the roads were slick and it made a grinding noise as a turned the wheel less then 1/2 a turn.. Anyone have a similar issue? I know when you turn it sharp in 4wd, it will bind/hop. Shouldn't do it at a quarter turn, and I have never had it do this before. I have had it at the dealer twice, service advisor and tech both road with me and heard it and don't know if anything is wrong. They want me to drive another 04 on the lot to see if it does the same thing....When I first heard the grinding I was at work on level pavement and had a buddy, stand outsdie and listen. It also binds so tight that with the wheels perfectly straight the truck won't even roll while in gear. If you give it a little gas it will move, but as soon as you let off, it stops almost like you threw it in park or hit the e brake....Any thoughts?? I have an 04 CC with BT and OR. I already had the rear diff replaced and about 10 minor things under warrenty done. I am about to go back to Toyota where I had 3 tacomas with only one recall for a battery. Said thing is I don't abuse this truck at all, with my toyota's I would tow bobcats with no trl brakes, haul so much stone the springs were compressed all the way and actually go offroading. I only use the 4x4 on this when the roads are bad.....

Fluid level is my first thought.
Gears not seating properly is my second thought.
On dry pavement, your system will hop/bind. 4WD is not good on those surfaces so when you say the roads were slick, I assume enough snow, sand, or standing water to create an intermediate surface between your tires and the road...You can go on to any Toyota Forum with this question and get the similar response.
If you have an '04, you would do well to look at the TSB's on your vehicle and not be so surprised at what may need to be fixed.
Glad to read that your Toyotas were so well-built. They are good trucks.

I didn't actually ask, probably should have, but you would think the dealer would have checked the gear oil. Wasn't much snow, but it was so cold it was like skating rink. Might be the gears as it takes forever to come back out of 4hi....We drove around a 10 acre dealership for 10 minutes before it finally came out of 4wd. Stopped started, put truck in neutral, anything you could think of and still wouldn't pop out. I am thinking that this motor is just to much for the rest of the drivetrain. I am going to take it back this week, if noone can get it handled it will be traded. DO the 07's have stronger parts and better quality? I love the truck, but will not tolerate this kind of performance from a vehicle I bought new and have one all the recommended maintence.

Maybe try this to get it out of 4Hi, shift to 2WD, stop, shift to R, backup a couple of feet, stop, then shift back to D.
PS, I think the 07s might have a slightly different front differential. People were having problems with the C-clip axle shafts popping out. My front 2004 diff was replaced because of this.
There seems to be alot of this lately... I just started a thread about a similar experience, But mine quit working entirely...
I have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow to get it in the shop... Wish me luck!

I saw on here were someone said the problem with the front diff's happens a lot in the cold. Which is when I first noticed it, below 20 degrees.. I also notice when I fisrt strat my truck it feels like no power steering. It also is harder then normal to trun in normal temps, espically when just started. I would take all the evidence from here to the dealer, but I doubt that would get me very far. I am very frustrated with my Titan.
Gave up, Sold the Titan. The heater started not working, it would work for a few minutes then cut out a few minutes, but the neail in the coffin was the tranny, started to just shift randomly, might be due to the front or rear diff, not sure. Got 19k for it 04 SE CC with BT, OR, and the utillity bed package, with 34k on it. Sound about right? I might get an 07 if I can be convinced the issue's are solved.
the 4wd wont disengage if it is in a slight bind, i was on a gravel road that turns to pavement... i switched out of 4 before the pavement and it wouldnt pop out for like 5 miles, but if you stop and make a turn one way it will come out, if not turn the other way... always works for me....
My 06 has no issues at all.
I would look at the Titan over the Toyota because the back seat is better and the BT mirrors are better.
You must be talking about the old Tundra, not the new one.The Tundra DC has more room in the back seat, and it reclines back, way more comfortable than the Titan KC.
The Tundra CM also has more room in the back seat than the Titan CC. Plus the rear seats can be adjusted forward and backwards and the seats also recline.
The Tundra's tow mirrors are a little smaller than the Titan's but not enough to notice, other wise they the same. Plus the Tundra's tow mirrors cut the glare, particularly from the passenger side mirror. That is the first thing I noticed when driving home 650 miles in the dark, the glare was cut by at least
50%.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... TRAITOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOOK AT HIS SIGNATURE!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol j/k congrats on the new ride... hope it serves you well...
hoojs12840: I have an 05 CC Titan with absolutely no problems. Sorry to hear of your problems and it sounds like you had quite a few. So many I raise an eye brow to it. But I find it interesting how as soon as you start talking about all the problems you are having you instantly turn to saying how much better a Toyota is.... Now, could the problems you say you are having be caused from abuse? Misuse? You said no, but gave some interesting examples of the use of your Tacoma's. And why three Tacoma's? I'm in the rock business so I have first hand knowledge of the examples you used. First off, towing a Bobcat with a Tacoma?!?!?!? And with NO trailer brakes?!?!?!?? Are you crazy??? That is just down right irresponsible! Extremely dangerous! First of all you were towing something that was way over it's limits and then on top of that, without trailer brakes. I would call that abuse as well as misuse! The second example you gave was loading it with rock to the point where the springs were compressed all the way and then you would take it offroading. Whenever I have my guys load trucks with rock I never have them take the truck off of a paved surface due to the incredible stress on the frame and drivetrain. I know what doing that does to a truck and it's just not needed when the truck is loaded. You did it while the truck was obviously overloaded. I would call this second example abuse.
You say you don't abuse the Titan, hmmm...I guess I'll have to take your word for it.

Thanks, I just hope that it holds up to my roads, only time will tell. I would have gladly kept the Titans, but they just weren't the truck for my application.
It could be that the Tundra isn't up to either, we will see.
