Transfer case and diff'l fluid change

After reading several posts here I changed the fluids in my transfer case and front/rear differentials. I'd done the rear before but always with 90W as my manual (2004) suggests. I never got a notice about switching to 140W, so I used that this time on the rear, 90W on the front.

The transfer case was fairly easy, but I didn't have any new 'crush' washers as somone else on here suggested, so I used the old ones and also some high temp thread sealant. Anyone think that'll be a problem?

I didn't know it had a crush washer, but it should be fine. I reused the one on the engine oil plug for the first year and it never leaked.

You should be fine. My guess if you don’t have any initial leaks you’re good to go. I know the rear diff is vented so not substantial pressure buildup to create leaks; I’m not sure about the front diff and the transfer case, but can’t imagine they can buildup any pressure either.

I know I'm resurrecting this thread from the dead, but I have a question to ask. For those of you who have changed your transfer case fluid, did you purchase a new transfer case filter to replace the old one on there?

I'm going to go out on a very short limb here and say that there is no filter in the transfer case. I have not heard of having a filter in a transfer case before and I don't recall seeing anything close to a transfer case pan where a filter would be serviced from.

As I recall I used the RTV on the drain plug. No problems yet. I might go with teflon tape next time since it is a lot cleaner and easier to use..

No crush washers or filter on my transfer case. Mine just has a fill and drain plug that a 10mm hex wrench fits into.

As far as the recommended sealant: Anaerobic Liquid Gasket, Nissan USA P/N 999MP-AM001P, Nissan Canada P/N 99998-50503, aftermarket P/N Permatex 51813 and 51817.

I used Permatex High Temp thread sealant on mine, available at any auto parts store.

Rear diff is pretty simple.
On a level surface take a 3/8 drive ratchet. Open the fill plug on the diff cover. Put your catch pan under the diff. Open the drain plug with the 3/8 also. let er drain... Wipe all the metal sludge off the drain plug it has a magnet on it to catch all that nasty junk, take your time getting it clean.

Re insert the drain plug, fill the rear diff to the capacity in the manual I believe it's 2.5 quarts. another way to make sure it's full a little more old skool, fill it ti'll fluid runs out the fill plug, let it stop runing ti'll fluid is just below the hole then plug it.

does nissan recommend 75-90 or 75-140 oil? i was going to put some amsoil in it but am not sure what weight to use, i dont tow anything, i just drive back and forth to work.

The rear takes 75-140 synthetic. The front diff takes 75-90 (if temps are a above 32F) and 75-80 if in a cooler climate.

Yes, AMSOIL ATF is NISSAN Matic D, J & K compatible. Please read the attached Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) from AMSOIL. It was revised August 2007, and list ALL applications that AMSOIL ATF is recommended for. Hope this helps you out. Please feel free to email me with any further questions you may have.

I changed my fluids out and replaced with Amsoil. Running great! And it's actually got better performance and viscosity tests, plus was cheaper to have it shipped to me than to buy the Mobil 1 off the shelf locally.
