Can I please get some responses from Titan (2005) owners on 4 Wheel Drive Dissengagement at Freeway speeds.
Does your Titan dissengage driving straight down the road (dry or wet or slippery). Mine will not unless I stop and drive in reverse or turn radically OR if I am on a slippery surface. Nissan says it is a NORMAL characteristic of my vehicle, whatever that means. My Ford F150 on the fly was just that....ON The FLy..regardless of condtions. You could engage/dissengage 4 wheel hi anytime. My 4 Wheel Drive indicator light sits there and blinks after I select to go back to 2 Wheel Drive and WILL NOT DISSENGAGE untill I stop and go in reverse or turn. I tried :
(1) Varying tire air pressures radically front to rear...amounts high low, etc..
(2) I tried speeding up, speeding down, braking, etc...No go.
It has done this from the first time I used it.
I would very much appreciate some input from some of you owners so I can get an idea if there is a trend here or if Nissan misadvertised their system.
It is advertised as an On-The-Fly system that can be engaged/dissengaged at 50 MPH or under. How would one turn radically or backup at 50 MPH ?
Thanks
Tim Lahr
Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
It should disengage without stopping. Mine will only disengage if I let off the throttle, as long as the drivetrain has torque on it it will not dissengage. Just let off the throttle for a second and it should disengage. If this doesn't work tell the dealer he is full of it and make him fix it.
Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
My 2004 started out on the fly, no problem shifting in or out of 4x4. After the front diff was replaced, it now requires going to reverse to get it out of 4x4, or else the indicator blinks as you describe.

Best is it out of warranty? If not I would bring it in. It is not supposed to work like that.

I guess I have been happy that the axle shafts haven't fallen out of the front diff again. I still have a few k before 60K. I was going to take it in just before 60K and have them take another look. My dealer has been good to me so far.
If you look at the service manual, the shifting into and out of 4x4 is pretty complex as far as the electronic interlock conditions & control. Not like the good old days of manual hubs and a couple of levers. There is a self-diagnostic procedure in the manual I might try.
Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
I think you might wanna take it in and have "the service people" trouble shoot that for you... Mine (06) has no problems with disengagement, slow speed or fast...

Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
hi thought i would put my 2 cents in, i have an 04 Crew Cab and just as the rest of you have described it will go into 4WD no problem however trying to get it out is another matter, it will just sit and blink at you unless you stop & reverse the vehicle. The truck only has 47k on it, does anybody know if the repair for this problem is covered under the 60k drivetrain warranty or will they try to pull the usual BS and try and get out of it. Considering this is a 4 on the fly system that used to work i wm thinking something has gone wrong !!!!

It is covered by the 60k mile warranty. Don't let them give you any other answer. None of them should disengage until the torque is removed from the drivetrain ,by simply letting off the accelerator it should dissengage. Any thing other than that is not working as it is supposed to, and should be fixed by nissan if still under warranty.
Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
Mine takes a minute to disengage as well and only in reverse. Not sure why but that is the only way I have gotten it to work. Have not tried engaging at anything faster than 25.
Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
On Mine, I just let off the throttle and it normally turns off. I have had a couple of instances where it would not turn off, so I slipped it into neutral and no throttle and it worked...Good luck with the problem!!

Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
Well took the truck up to Nissan to be fed the usual line of "No Fault Found" apparently the tech took my truck out, ran it at 40MPH and it shifted fine ( as is normal ) then after a few miles shifted it out of 4WD and into 2WD and they claim it works as advertised !!! Now they are charging me $37 for diagnostics fees as there was no problem with the vehicle. I am really surprised because when I took the truck up there it was doing the same thing prior to me dropping it off. Must have been the weather or something. I am not sure now that the truck has almost 50k on it whether, because I have brought it up for this problem, if I bring it in at 60,001 miles whether they will not honor the warranty.....wait what am I saying this dealership hardly wanted to honor the 3/36000 mile warranty, so yet another useless trip up to the dealer !!!!
Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
got the truck back after the service dept. was closed......put it into 4WD and when I went back into 2WD the symbol just sat and flashed at me until I stopped the truck and put it into reverse....the dealership was clsoed so I am now waiting till today to hear.......they SUCK !!!!

Grab the service manager, not writer, and have him drive it with you shotgun, show him the issue first hand....

Re: 4 Wheel Drive Hi Dissengagement at freeway speeds
Mine shifts out of 4wd when there is no torque on the driveline. Even with a smoked stubshaft and front driveshaft u joint lol. This winter towing my snowmobiles in a blizzard it was pretty easy to tell, made so much damn noise in 4wd, didn't know if I'd make it home, but it still shifted out on the fly.
