Catalytic Converter

My CEL came on friday night, along with a very nasty rattle and not much power. I take it into the dealership next day and they tell me my driver side catalytic converter is falling apart inside (chunks of it are in my driveway). Just wondering if this is a common thing with Nissan's because they just replaced my passenger side manifold two weeks ago for it being cracked and leaking. They also had to replace all my catalytic converters in my Altima few months ago. Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Catalytic Converter

You just lost your engine. Mine was replaced last month $12,000 under warranty. Cat junk was sucked up into your engine.

Re: Catalytic Converter

I sure hope not, the rattle went away probably cause all that junk was in my driveway behind my truck this morning. I am just worried about that stuff being trapped in my FM muffler. Do you think it could lead up to a replacement motor? The truck is running "ok" just smells really rich and has a little less power. Probably not the smartest idea but i did have it out at the track and my time dropped a full second so I left as that was my sign that it was something more serious than an exhaust rattle. What were the symptoms of your truck?

Re: Catalytic Converter

I drove 500 miles after they replaced my cats, then oil pressure dropped and loud rod knock. Also new oil was jet black.

Re: Catalytic Converter

I know of one other engine replaced because of this ... hooligan's. I hope I don't start hearing of a bunch of these.

This could be a costly fix for Nissan, but if out of warranty, my $12,000!!! ... hmmm maybe I will end up selling the Titan at 99K miles, (I have the 100K mile extended warranty), I had planned on keeping it forever but ...

I seem to remember the Cat warranty being very long though, so I wonder if the damage to the engine a shattering Cat causes would also be covered?

Re: Catalytic Converter

Keep in mind that cat is covered on an emissions warranty 8 years-80,000 miles all states!
Yes some do injest back into the exhaust ports ruining the engines. It depends on which screen gets burned the upper or lower. If it's the screen on top of the cat the engine may be in trouble,if it is on the lower end,it usually blows out the exhaust. Most likely taking out a rear O2 sensor with it.
The dealers know to inspect which end blew out for possible further damage.
The warranty on this cat carries over to any parts subsequently damaged from it's failure.
So if the motor does get debris and turns into a giant garbage disposal this would be covered also by the warranty on the cat.
If anyone is having problems getting this handled let me know, maybe I can help!

Re: Catalytic Converter

Only 80K huh? Maybe I'll have to sell it at 79K then. Lol
My 100K mile Gold Preferred Security Plus warranty doesn't specifically mention the Cat, but covers ... it looks like 50 or so emission components, and who knows about down stream components like a $12,000 engine on the extended. hmm

Re: Catalytic Converter

Yeah but that warranty doesn't cover damages caused by a failing part only that part, that's how I read it anyways. Hopefully I am wrong.

Re: Catalytic Converter

Just wanted to update everybody, they fixed my truck last weekend and all is well with it. It seemed to get some of it's power back and I also got 14.1 mpg this week which is the best I have ever gotten besides a road trip. I just hope the motor doesn't blow up now.

Does anyones engine tick/ squeak kinda loud on cold startup for about one minute? It's kinda making me wonder
