Anyone else get a clunk shifting into reverse?

When I shift into reverse when the truck is cold I clunks. I know its because the engine is idleing higher for the first few minutes. So everytime the truck sits for a couple hours or when I get in in the morning it will do this. If I shift very slow letting it sit between park and reverse it also won'd do it. I am just curious if anyone else has this happen?

Dont worry, Its normal. Unless the trans falls to the ground and the drive shaft it sticking up through the bed of the truck! Then you might want to take it in. Other than that, they all do it to some extent.

One member even had the rear replaced because of that clunk. His brand new rear did the same clunk.

Its not the clunk that it makes if you are on an incline. Its as if you were doing a Neutral bomb or whatever you call it.

This is a pretty normal thing is what i've come to find out. My titan is my first truck so i wasn't ready for it at first, but it comes with the territory when you drive a 5300 lb. beast. (And man is it loud on inclines)

Re: Anyone else get a clunk shifting into reverse?

I read an article in Motortrend or Edmunds where they did a long term test on an 05 Titan. They took the truck to the dealer to complain about a clunk when putting in reverse. The dealer replaced the whole drive shaft. Motor trend said that ended the clunk. I have always suspected the front bearing support failing. The rubber ring that supports it was torn up on mine. I think that allowed too much movement in the driveshaft which could also play havock on the differential. My dealer is looking into that now.

thats interesting because i have that stupid vibration at 25mph that i suspect is coming from the driveshaft.

Re: Anyone else get a clunk shifting into reverse?

If you climb under your truck and look at the bearing support about 1-2 feet behind the transmission. There is a rubber ring which supports the bearing. My rubber support is cracked all the way around. If you push and pull on the shaft , see if you have a lot of movement. I think this rubber support is busting up and allowing too much movement in the drive shaft. All that torque from the engine and trying to move that 5000# of truck maybe be causing that support to buck up and damage the bearing support. Some of our vibration could be comming from there also. Makes me wonder if some of the diff problems may be caused by this drive shaft.

Re: Anyone else get a clunk shifting into reverse?

mine makes a clunk from park to reverse to drive back and forth to drive like there's slop there it has a slight stall to it I think mine is either this bushing or the universal wonder if it'll cause more damage and if I should take it in? I'm waiting til it cools down then I'll climb under there and see if there's slop such as I can spin it back and forth by hand or move the entire drive shaft around... I'll call transtech tomorrow and see what they think about that if it is indeed a universal or rubber grommet of some sort, it's a transmission and rearend specialist here. the dealership sends all their gear/tranny stuff there so he'd know for sure
