So I am sure all of you know it was a poor idea to have a tube going into the fender where mud and water can be sucked up into the motor. I crossed a 2 foot deep creek this weekend and the titan started spuddering on me. I checked the filter and it was wet. I let it dry and its cool now but I was scared for a while. Anyone know a diy fix for this problem. I took a nissan altama through the same creek and it was fine. you would think a 4x4 titan could handle it.
You need to get the XE model wheel well. For some unknown reason the XE wheel well has no openings like the SE and LE models. There's a few old threads here about it.

I think someone on here changed their fender liners to the XE liners and it really helped. If I remember correctly, the SE and LE liners are weaker or less protective than the XE liners????
can you just take out the straw. I did a search and no luck. I do not want any thing lower than where the filter is. I dont cross many rivers or anything. but it seems even a deep puddle would do some damage.

I wouldn't take out the fender intake. If I remember correctly, the XE plastic wheel well was like $35 each and you only need one imo.

I know this thread is for the intake mods/design, but FYI..Whenever it looks like water/muddy water gets sucked into the engine, you can do a quick fix on the trail by unscrewing your sparkplugs, spraying WD40 into the heads and cranking the engine several times with out them installed. this method pushes out the water that may have gotten into the cylinders. Hopefully this lessens any engine damage.

Does the "Air Box Mod" remove the snout I think the OP is referring to? Cut off the snout and no more worry???
The air box mod shortens the tube inside the box, not outside.

The tube going into the fender acts as a velocity stack and draws in the coolest air possible. If you remove the tube, you lose the velocity stack effect and will be drawing in hot engine compartment air.
